Chemistry

The Faculty of Chemistry uses state-of-the-art technology and methods to train students in chemistry, chemical engineering and biotechnology in Krefeld. Our specialisation in teaching education and research is in the areas of sustainability, surfaces and Chemistry 4.0.

Applied science you can touch

Many exciting projects from the faculties await you in the foyer of the J-Building. Students will present the results of their work from teaching and research projects and will be available to answer questions.

This year, the following projects will be presented:

  • "Technical Chemistry a look beyond the test tube" (Prof Schultz)
  • "3D printed chemistry reactor" (Dr Ebling)
  • "Paint chemistry, pigments and colour prediction" (Prof. Schmitz)
  • "Microplastics" (Prof Schram)
  • Biotechnology/SMINT" (Prof Wagner)
  • "Chemical fireworks" (Prof. Roppertz)
  • Poster presentation "Erstis Forschen" (students in their first semester present the results of their first research projects)
  • Presentation of the Sustainability AwardAI-supported robotics: camera, AI and robot arm work together and carry out autonomous actions - demonstrated using the example of four-in-a-row.
  • Component segmentation : 3D scans are compared with CAD data to automatically recognise processing areas.
  • 3D image recognition: 3D camera developed in-house with AI object recognition and position determination.
  • Auto-Aim-Wastebin: An autonomous waste bin recognises litter and collects it automatically.
  • Soldering robot: Automated soldering of electronic components with a robot.
  • Car park monitoring: IoT project with Bosch IP cameras and Peakboard for intelligent car park monitoring.
  • Virtual Reality³: VR experiences for warehouse processes, a virtual university laboratory and a playful introduction for visitors.
  • Laboratory air conditioning system: prototype for controlling humidity in laboratories.
  • Track&TrAIce: Tomato-based recording of stocks and positions of goods carriers in production.
  • Mixed Reality Lab: VR and mixed reality applications for human-machine interaction and production processes.
  • AI & Cobots: Use of collaborative robots in the laboratory for safe human-robot collaboration.
  • Infrared heaters: Investigation of energy-efficient heating concepts in refurbished residential buildings.
  • Wing Racer: Practical orientation first semester project with teamwork and technical implementation.
  • Brau dich schlau workshop: Experience how students put technology, processes and teamwork into practice when brewing.

 

Live and in colour: Get to know the faculties...

During the Engineering Days, we regularly offer guided tours of the faculties in small groups. Gain an insight into the premises of the institutes, laboratories and classrooms. Staff and students from the university will be on hand to answer your questions and provide information.

The tour starts in the foyer of the J-building. The meeting point is signposted.

Lecture "The labour market for engineers"
Friday, 23.01.

Despite current economic and global challenges, the labour market for engineers remains stable in perspective. Issues such as environmental protection, the mobility transition, decarbonisation and demographic change will ensure a sustained demand for qualified engineers in the long term.

In his presentation, Peter Kraps from the careers advice service at the Krefeld Employment Agency will provide an overview of current developments on the engineering labour market. Both opportunities and challenges in various engineering specialisations will be highlighted. Especially in times of financial and economic crises, rising energy costs and global uncertainties, the lecture offers valuable orientation for prospective students and students.

Following the lecture, there will be an opportunity for personal discussions and individual counselling.

Formula Student

As part of the Formula Student racing series, international universities compete against each other with self-built cars on professional race tracks. Since 2006, a race has also been held at the legendary Hockenheimring in Germany. Students design, build and market their vehicles themselves.

You can also follow the official rollout of the latest racing car live on YouTube. The excitement for the new season is at its peak.

At the Engineering Days, you will have the opportunity to see the new racing car in action.

On Engineering Day 2026, we invite you to discover the fascinating world of technical enamelling! In our Surface Engineering laboratory, you will experience at first hand how technology and creativity merge.

Learn the art of enamelling and find out how you can create your own unique pieces of jewellery. Immerse yourself in the world of Surface Engineering and put your creative ideas into practice!

Design your own personal piece of jewellery and take it home proudly as a souvenir. Be inspired and show us how you combine art and technology!
