University life at the HSNR

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

University life

The Hochschule Niederrhein has plenty to offer beyond the lecture hall too. Whether it’s language courses, affordable lunches or a wide range of leisure activities, the Hochschule Niederrhein offers a wealth of opportunities to meet up, exchange ideas and further your education.

At all three campuses in Krefeld (Krefeld South Campus and Campus West) and Mönchengladbach, students have access to modern libraries. Students who would like to learn a foreign language or take an advanced course to improve their existing skills are offered a wide range of options at the Language Centre. All three campuses have a canteen where students benefit from reduced prices. As well as two main courses and side dishes, there is a wide selection at the salad bar, a ‘Green Corner’ and a cafeteria in the mornings.

University sports, the choir and the activities organised by the AStA and the faculty student bodies ensure there is plenty of variety after lectures. The university sports programme is extensive, offering over 20 different sports ranging from badminton to Quidditch, volleyball and yoga. The university’s AStA organises quiz nights, talks, cinema screenings in lecture theatres and games evenings.

The AStA
The General Students’ Committee

The AStA is the university-wide representative body for the student body and acts as its executive body.

Among other things, it advises students on social and financial matters, deals with university, environmental, gender and anti-discrimination policies, and promotes engagement in cultural activities and student sport. Further details on the AStA’s work and services can be found on the AStA website. The latest news is also shared via the AStA’s Instagram channel.

The AStA’s work and services are funded from the student body’s budget, which is managed by the AStA and replenished each semester from student body contributions. The AStA uses these funds to finance projects and purchases, and to provide the officers with an expense allowance as a contribution towards their costs in recognition of their commitment.

The AStA consists of the Chair, the Deputy Chair and a large number of officers and staff members.
In principle, students can approach the AStA with any concerns they may have. The AStA team, which consists almost exclusively of students from the university, is always open to students who wish to get involved in the AStA and help shape it with their ideas, visions and actions.

With an office in both Mönchengladbach and Krefeld, the AStA is represented at both of the university’s campuses.

What the AStA has to offer

Student counselling

The AStA offers support with anxieties, problems and concerns. It acts as an intermediary between government departments, insurance companies and landlords, and provides assistance with administrative procedures and finding accommodation or a job. For international students, the AStA can also help with translations. It is available to answer questions about funding your living expenses during your studies, e.g. questions about BAföG, or about loans and credit. In cases of financial hardship, there is the option of an interest-free loan. The AStA supports victims of discrimination and is available to answer questions relating to LGBTQIA+ issues.

Leisure activities

In the AStA Cellar and at Waldhausen Astoria, the student event venue, the AStA organises concerts, film nights, parties, readings, and art and cultural events. You can find out what’s on right now on the Instagram pages of the AStA, the AStA cellar, the Waldhausen Astoria and Beers 4 Queers.

In collaboration with the university, the AStA organises a wide range of sporting activities, which students can take part in at no extra cost.

Thanks to a partnership between the AStA and the Theatre Krefeld and Mönchengladbach, students can attend all regular performances and the symphony concerts by the Niederrheinische Sinfoniker free of charge. Further information and programmes can be found on the theatre’s website.

With your student email address, you can enjoy the first hour of every hire free of charge with Nextbike, as well as other discounts.

The University’s ensemble

The university has a mixed choir comprising soprano, alto, tenor and bass parts. The members come from all walks of campus life – but ‘external choristers’ are also very welcome.

Together, the choir works on a fascinating repertoire, complemented by vocal and aural training. There are usually fixed semester programmes that encourage participation and are presented at concerts at the end of each semester. The repertoire includes both sacred and secular pieces.

Rehearsals usually take place on *Wednesdays*, from 6 pm to 7 pm in the *main auditorium – Krefeld South Campus*. Our choir is open to students and personnel at our university, as well as their friends and family, and to anyone outside the university who is interested in exciting choral music. To find out more: Just pop in – to join in the singing: please contact the choir director, Karlheinz Schüffler (email karlheinz.schueffler(at)hs-niederrhein.de). After the summer break, we will start again at the beginning of the 24/25 winter semester – provided that ensemble work is possible.

Formula Student at the HSNR

Here is a YouTube video. Click on it to watch. The data protection regulations of google apply!

As part of the Formula Student racing series, international universities compete against one another on professional race tracks in cars they have built themselves.

The interdisciplinary team of students, founded in September 2011, has been taking part in races regularly since 2012.

Although the team has grown considerably in the meantime, we are always looking for motivated students who want to get involved in this exciting project.

As well as the technical tasks involved in the design and construction of the car, there are also opportunities for students from other faculties to get involved in the organisation.

The LAKUM at the Hochschule Niederrhein

LAKUM is a meeting place for everyone at the university – first and foremost, of course, for students, but university teachers / lecturers and all other members of staff are equally welcome! LAKUM has a presence at both university campuses. LAKUM means ‘to get up’. The word comes from Hebrew. It is a very vivid language, and here it is not just about getting out of bed in the morning, but also about finding your footing and a starting point, coming to life, making a fresh start, and getting going.

PrideProgress@HSNR

As a pioneer, The Hochschule Niederrhein offers its members a wide range of pathways and opportunities. Through ‘PrideProgress@HSNR’, the university creates a space for all staff and students who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

The “PrideProgress@HSNR” network connects staff and students across the university. It offers both a platform and a safe space for sharing experiences and providing mutual support. The initiative aims to represent the LGBTQIA+ community both within and outside the university and sees itself as a voice for queer issues. The name ‘PrideProgress’ also stands for the representation of the queer BIPOC community.

All staff and students who feel this initiative is relevant to them are invited to join the network via the contact form and help shape it.
We, the project group – comprising staff and students – have set up the network. We act as the central point of contact. Furthermore, we see ourselves as the points of contact for this network.

Room of Silence

The space is intended to be a place of personal retreat for all students and staff at the Hochschule Niederrhein; a place for prayer, meditation and personal devotion, open to members of all religious communities and world views.

Campus Week

Have you always wanted to find out what topics students in other faculties are studying and broaden your horizons beyond Business Administration and Economics? Then Campus Week is just the thing for you!

During this week, you’ll have the chance to attend courses and workshops in other faculties or here with us that aren’t part of the standard curriculum. Weekly lectures are suspended this week so that you can focus entirely on what Campus Week has to offer. Take a look at the varied programme offered by the faculties and attend the courses that suit you best.

Tutor Programme

Tutors support teaching in all faculties at the university and help students settle into their studies. To ensure they are not ‘thrown in at the deep end’, they are prepared for their role through the university-wide tutor programme, which covers both methodology and teaching techniques. This training also offers the opportunity to obtain a tutor certificate.

The individual seminars in the tutor programme are tailored to the relevant target groups. For example, first-year tutors are trained to ensure a successful induction week; subject tutors receive valuable methodological and didactic advice on how to structure their subject tutorials. Revision tutors acquire essential skills for advising and supporting study groups. Opportunities for participants to share experiences with one another are provided in every seminar.

Events@HSNR

Events are held regularly at the university throughout the year.

There’s always the big campus festival at the Krefeld South Campus on the day before Ascension Day, the freshers’ party to mark the start of the academic year in September at the Mönchengladbach campus, and various other events, such as award ceremonies, AStA parties, the scholarship award ceremony, and much more. Stay up to date via niuswoche and our social media channels!

If you’d like to organise something yourselves – for example, with your faculty student body – get in touch with us – we’ll be happy to help!
