Equality

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

The equality

The Hochschule Niederrhein is one of the largest and most efficient universities of applied sciences in Germany. We open up perspectives: With an academic apprenticeship that is fit for the future, we create the foundation for our graduates to be in demand on the job market.

As an employer, The Hochschule Niederrhein supports its employees and students in achieving a better work/study/career balance. Good framework conditions and a family-friendly, appreciative culture create the necessary prerequisites.

We offer concrete support services for university employees with care and family responsibilities as well as gender-equitable working conditions and career opportunities.

Family friendliness and gender equality are an ongoing process for us. That is why we strengthen offerings that contribute to this and develop new solutions as needed.

Tasks and topics

The central Equal Opportunity Officer and her representatives in the faculties support the university in the implementation of the statutory equal opportunity mandate and offer members of the university advice on the various aspects of equal opportunity. In particular, they participate in the university's development planning as well as in structural and personnel decisions.

In addition to promoting equality at the university, Equality is also committed to improving the compatibility of family, studies and career. To this end, on the one hand, various continuing training and qualification measures are carried out for university employees and counseling is offered. In cooperation with the Office for Equal Opportunity, the Compatibility Department also offers advice on childcare, caring for relatives, studying and working with children, and family-related issues.

Orientation measures on studies and apprenticeships at the Hochschule Niederrhein are organized for pupils to help them broaden their perspectives and make their decision on their future career path detached from traditional gender roles.

Focal points of work for equality

Advice and support

  • For questions relevant to equality
  • Equality advice and support is currently provided by phone or digitally via Jitsi-Meet. If you have any questions about this, just send me an email.
  • In the area of reconciling studies/work and family , Equal Opportunity works closely with the Office of Equal Opportunity 's Compatibility Division:
    • The Hochschule Niederrhein places a high priority on the compatibility of family and/or studies and career. As a family-friendly university, we offer various childcare options:
      • In cooperation with the MaxiMUMM daycare center, we offer daycare occupancy places for children of our students and employees near the university in both Mönchengladbach and Krefeld.
If you are interested, please contact the Office for Equal Opportunity.
      • For the 6-12 year old children of our students and employees, the Compatibility Department of the Office for Equal Opportunity regularly offers a Vacation Care during the school holidays.
      • The KreativLaboffers the 9-14 year old children of our students and employees the opportunity to become creatively active themselves.
    • The topic of care is becoming increasingly important. In addition to our consultations on the topic of care, our network partner, the "Netzwerk pflegend Beschäftigte" (network of employees who care), offers our employees further services. In addition to regularly offered specialist lectures, the network can be reached by telephone seven days a week around the clock for those seeking help and supports the persons concerned in various aspects relating to the topic of care.
    • Under the term teleworking/mobile working, we summarize flexible forms of work in which our employees perform part of their work outside the university buildings. Within the scope of the possibilities of the respective position, we offer work in a home office to support a better balance between family/care and career. Currently, the service agreements for this area are being revised.
    • All employees of the Hochschule Niederrhein have the option of using flexible working hours to better balance their work with individual needs.
    • Manage work and family! Do you have family responsibilities or other personal reasons that require you to reduce your working hours / work part-time? The Hochschule Niederrhein follows the principle of accommodating you as far as possible regarding your working hours. Why? We want you to be able to manage your life well in all areas.
    • With us, you can advance your career on a part-time basis. We make sure that, as far as possible for service reasons, management responsibilities can also be taken on part-time. Many further training courses for employees can also be taken part-time. We attach great importance to this when selecting providers. If this is not possible, we give preference to offers that organize childcare.
    • Take advantage of the part-time apprenticeship opportunity. We want to give you, as a committed parent caring for a relative, the chance to complete a good apprenticeship and earn a vocational qualification. To this end, we offer you family-friendly framework conditions. Part-time apprenticeships are currently available in our administration. If you are interested, we would be happy to provide you with more information about part-time apprenticeships.
    • One job - two jobs At our company, it is generally possible to share a job(job-sharing). If the position allows it, we implement a variety of individual models. In practical application, we initially allocate a vacant position on a part-time basis and, once the contract has been completed, look for a suitable counterpart, then also on a part-time basis.
    • The central equal opportunity officer is involved in the revision of regulations (currently: basic and election regulations) and can thus contribute aspects relevant to equal opportunity.

Discrimination / Sexism / Harassment

All people have the same dignity and the same rights. We want to prevent discrimination of any kind at all levels. No person should be discriminated against because of their gender. Equality actively works to prevent sexism in any form and at all levels.

Have you experienced a sexist assault or feel discriminated against because of your gender?

Get in contact with us, we will help!

Appointment and recruitment procedures

By law, equality is involved in selection procedures for professorships(appointment procedures) and employees.

When making a professional decision for the Hochschule Niederrhein is a decision also depends on the private conditions, for all those who are affected by your change of location or profession. That is why we are here for all those affected.

We are a member of the Dual Career Network Rhinelanda network of universities and research facilities. The aim is to attract excellent scientists to the Rhineland region. To this end, the network partners not only offer excellent job opportunities, but also provide dual-career couples with a practical means of combining career and partnership/family. Academic couples in particular will find support here.

Orientation measures / STEM promotion

Orientation measures on studies and apprenticeships at the Hochschule Niederrhein are organized for pupils(Girls' & Boys' Day, MINT DUAL, projects in and with schools) to help them broaden their perspectives and make their decision about their future career path detached from traditional gender roles.

Further training offers

Equality regularly organizes lectures, seminars and workshops on equality issues, also with the involvement of cooperation partners.

One specialisation is the special promotion of women with regard to their careers, as women, despite equal performance and often better degrees, are often placed at a disadvantage in professional life. To counteract this disadvantage, we provide women with knowledge and skills in seminars that enable them to market themselves more effectively.

In addition, Equality also supports female doctoral students(doctoral sponsorship), particularly in areas where women with doctorates are underrepresented.

The HSNR as an employer and place of study

Equality supports the university in positioning itself as an attractive employer and place to study.
The Hochschule Niederrhein has been certified with the "audit familiengerechte hochschule" since 2010. As a family-friendly employer, The Hochschule Niederrhein strives to align its culture in the area of organization and leadership with the talents and competencies of its employees. To this end, we want to make optimal use of the diversity of our employees' skills, experience and potential. To this end, we align our HR work with the phases of life and focus on framework conditions that contribute to a better balance between work, care, nursing and private life. We are developing strategies to prepare our HR culture and our managers for these challenges and tasks.

As an attractive place to study, we want performance alone to count.
Everyone should have an equal opportunity to pursue higher education, regardless of background, circumstance or educational background.
As a university, we want to comprehensively consider the diversity of our students in their everyday studies. We design tools and measures for different university groups that enable us to better integrate them and accompany them more successfully on their path to a degree.
The university expresses this attitude, among other things, with the "Shaping Diversity" certificate from the Stifterverband der deutschen Wissenschaft (Donors' Association for the Promotion of Sciences and Humanities in Germany) received in 2018 as part of the diversity audit.

Equality at the university

As an employer, The Hochschule Niederrhein supports its employees and students in achieving a better work/study/career balance. Good framework conditions and a family-friendly, appreciative culture create the necessary prerequisites.

As an equal opportunity provider, we offer concrete support services both centrally and in the faculties for university employees with care and family responsibilities, as well as gender-equitable working conditions and career opportunities.

Family friendliness and gender equality are an ongoing process for us. That's why we strengthen offerings that contribute to this and develop new solutions as needed.

Equal Opportunity Commission

Representatives from administration, teaching education, research, elected students and employees form the Equal Opportunity Commission of the University. Together, they support the work of equality at the Hochschule Niederrhein with their everyday experiences and competencies, each for one term of office.

The members meet regularly with the Equal Opportunities Officer to discuss open issues, new topics and develop projects.

Gender-inclusive language

In its meeting on February 4, 2019, the Senate of the Hochschule Niederrhein adopted the currently valid framework plan for gender equality (please insert link to framework plan). This specifies the use of gender-equitable language in both internal and external communication.

Because we want to be consistent in gender-inclusive writing across the university, we have written this handout. It sets out rules and makes suggestions on how we would like to use gender-inclusive wording in the future. Existing documents do not need to be revised immediately; here, it is sufficient to use gender-inclusive language in the next edition or revision.

If you have any questions, Equal Opportunity and the University Communications department will be happy to assist you.

Yours, Dr. Sandra Laumen
Equal Opportunity Officer

Family and studies / career

The Hochschule Niederrhein supports the compatibility of family and studies or career.

For the area of compatibility, in addition to the strategic handling of the topic by the Equal Opportunities Officer, the family service represents a fixed offer at the Hochschule Niederrhein. At both locations, offers are made to promote the compatibility of studies as well as career and family responsibilities. This includes the possibility of counseling, the arrangement of U3 places in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach as well as the provision of general information on the childcare landscape, the offer of parent-child rooms as well as breastfeeding and nappy-changing rooms, information on parent-child parking spaces and play corners in the library.

Information and contacts are also provided on all aspects of caring for relatives.

If you have any questions or ideas, please contact the Equal Opportunities Officer at gleichstellung(at)hs-niederrhein.de and the family service at familienservice(at)hs-niederrhein.de.

MINT Forum

STEM Degree programmes today are more vibrant, diverse and exciting than ever before and far from typical stereotypes. Nevertheless, the number of women in technical, scientific Degree programmes is still low. The MINT Forum is a network that connects women within the university as well as facilitates contacts to the regional economy.

PrideProgress@HSNR

The Hochschule Niederrhein as a trailblazer offers many paths and opportunities for its members. With "PrideProgress@HSNR" the university creates space for all employees and students who feel part of the LGBTQIA+ community.

Equality at The Hochschule Niederrhein

The work of Equality ensures quality and promotes a culture of appreciation and tolerance. In addition, students, prospective students, and university employees are supported in issues relating to the compatibility of family and studies/career.

In this way, we create better framework conditions, especially for women. Together, we can work more effectively to eliminate existing disadvantages and help realize substantial equality of opportunity.

If you are affected by disadvantages or discrimination, please contact us or send us an e-mail - we will help!

The Equal Opportunity Team includes the central Equal Opportunity Officer, the head of the MINT Forum and MINT-DUAL, the Equal Opportunity Officers of the faculties and the Equal Opportunity Commission.
