The history of the city of Krefeld, also known as the "velvet and silk city", is impressive. This is also made clear in the article "A city on a silken thread - 650 years of Krefeld" by Georg Opdenberg in the current issue of the generation magazine Zwischentöne. The 650th anniversary was the reason for planning this series of lectures. We are delighted that we have been able to attract experts who will shed light on selected aspects of Krefeld's history.

The "Crefelder Höhere Webeschule", founded in 1855, and the "Handwerker- und Kunstgewerbeschule", founded in 1904, both predecessor institutions of today's Hochschule Niederrhein, were outstanding and innovative educational institutions in their time. They have left behind many traces that are still significant today. The history of both institutions and their impact on the culture and art of Krefeld in particular will be explained in this lecture.
