Note: The event will be held in German.
The history of the city of Krefeld, also known as the "velvet and silk city", is impressive. This is also made clear in the article "A city on a silken thread - 650 years of Krefeld" by Georg Opdenberg in the current issue of the generation magazine Zwischentöne. The 650th anniversary was the reason for planning this series of lectures. We are delighted that we have been able to attract experts who will shed light on selected aspects of Krefeld's history.

Prof. Dr. Stefanie van de Kerkhof

Thursday | 20.06.2024 | 16:00 - 17:30| via Zoom
The lecture provides a vivid introduction to the eventful history of Krefeld as an industrial location, its pioneers in the silk and velvet industry and the most important companies. In particular, the regional circumstances of the "Rhenish Manchester" will be placed in the context of national and international development. One focus is on Krefeld personalities such as the von der Leyens, Emilie Oetker, Dr. Edmund ter Meer, Johann Kleinewefers and Dr. Julius Stockhausen. The networks of the leading textile and textile finishing industry with spin-offs in the chemical industry and mechanical engineering are also presented. The specific regional economy manifested itself in new ideas in technological and organizational terms, in entrepreneurial innovations and specific products such as ties and calenders, which were produced in Krefeld and the surrounding area and went all over the world!
