Lecture series: 650 years of Krefeld - Historical reflections

24.06.2024 16:00 - 17:30

Note: The event will be held in German.

The history of the city of Krefeld, also known as the "velvet and silk city", is impressive. This is also made clear in the article "A city on a silken thread - 650 years of Krefeld" by Georg Opdenberg in the current issue of the generation magazine Zwischentöne. The 650th anniversary was the reason for planning this series of lectures. We are delighted that we have been able to attract experts who will shed light on selected aspects of Krefeld's history.

Velvet and silk under the swastika - Nazi history in Krefeld

Sandra Franz
Historian, head of the NS documentation center Krefeld

Monday, 24.06.2024 |16:00 - 17:30| via Zoom

In the 1930s, Krefeld was an important economic center and place of residence for a diverse and heterogeneous urban society. From January 1933, the National Socialists made use of existing enemy stereotypes and began systematically attacking and forcing unwanted groups out of the city - political opponents, Jewish people, homosexuals and numerous other groups. In addition, the undermining of democratic structures and the takeover of the administration met with little resistance here, as in most places. In her lecture, historian Sandra Franz, head of the Krefeld Nazi Documentation Center, will provide an overview of how the year 1933 changed Krefeld and what traces the following twelve years and the associated events left behind here.
