At the start of the 2026/2027 winter semester, the Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR) is welcoming 3,082 new students to its campuses in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach. 2,670 of them are starting a bachelor’s degree programme, whilst 412 are beginning a master’s degree programme. Following the induction week, during which students were able to get to know their fellow students, the campuses and the university’s central facilities, regular academic life is now getting under way.
“The start of their studies marks the beginning of a new chapter in the new students’ lives and, with it, a personal journey at The Hochschule Niederrhein. The university aims to support the students on this journey, create favourable conditions for their studies and open up a wide range of opportunities for their personal and professional development. We are delighted that so many young people have chosen to pursue studies at the Hochschule Niederrhein,” says University President Professor Dr Susanne Meyer.
Last winter semester, 2,759 new students completed registration at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences. Despite the transition of the school system from G8 to G9 in North Rhine-Westphalia and the resulting smaller Abitur cohorts, this year’s figure is not only at a comparable level but, with 3,082 first-year students, is actually slightly higher. This continues the stable trend in enrolment figures seen at the HSNR in recent years.
The new students are spread across more than 50 Bachelor’s and Master’s degree programmes in nine faculties. Demand is particularly high for the Bachelor’s degree programme in Social Work at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences in Mönchengladbach: 292 students registered for this programme in the winter semester. This is followed by Business Administration and Economics in the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics in Mönchengladbach, with 224 first-year students, and Applied Psychology in the Faculty of Health Care in Krefeld, with 161 registrations.
