University goes museum: short lectures for pupils at MuseumsUni

The popular MuseumsUni Mönchengladbach event series for secondary school students will take place at Rheydt Castle this year from 11 September to 30 October. The lectures on topics such as creative advertising, e-cars and crypto analyses are free of charge.

Exciting topics that move our society - presented in an entertaining way in student-friendly lectures in the historic Rheydt Castle: this is the MuseumsUni Mönchengladbach, which is now in its 13th round this year. The lectures in the Knights' Hall take place on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 12 noon to 1 p.m. and are aimed at middle and upper secondary school students. Six professors from The Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR) and two guest lecturers give an insight into their main areas of work in their lectures. Pupils learn how diverse the subjects and topics at the HSNR and in the world of science are.

In his lecture "From posters to social media", Professor Richard Jung from the Faculty of Design will give an insight into the evolution of creative advertising, for example. And Professor Dr Nils Kopal (Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science) will reveal how encrypted letters from ancient times can be deciphered using cryptanalysis in his lecture "Cracking secret messages". The lecture by Professor Dr Michael Heber and Professor Dr Ferdinand Hermanns (Faculty of Engineering) will focus on electric cars and their sustainability, while Professor Dr Christian Schmitz from the Faculty of Chemistry will address the question of how paint pigments can be developed from flower dyes.

"White smoke or Habemus Papam" - in her lecture, Professor Dr Dorothea Sattler from the Faculty of Catholic Theology at the University of Münster will focus on the election of the Pope and the unique ritual of the conclave. Her contribution will also deal with the challenges facing the world church today.

The Hochschule Niederrhein's Vice President for University Culture and Diversity, Professor Dr Donja Amirpur, will talk about the question "Where do you really come from?" and the power of distinctions - and why some questions (can) play into the hands of racism.

The lectures "Does the new US customs policy endanger our prosperity?" by Professor Dr Katharina Erhardt (Heinrich Heine University Düsseldorf) and "Unchecked growth - whatever the cost?" by Professor Dr Martin Wenke (Faculty of Business Administration and Economics) will address economic aspects.

The programme is aimed at middle and upper school class groups accompanied by up to two teachers or chaperones. Registration is required at Museum Schloss Rheydt by calling 02161 252681.
