Successful performance for The Hochschule Niederrhein: student Maharathh Maharathh won the bronze medal at the adh University Trophy in boxing. The chemical engineering student competed in Jena in the 80 to 85-kilogram weight class.
The competitions were organised by the University Sports Club Jena e.V. (USV) and supported by the General German University Sports Association. More than 130 athletes from all over Germany competed in the USV sports hall.
In the semi-final, Maharathh faced a boxer from the host Friedrich Schiller University Jena. After an intense fight, he was narrowly beaten on points and finished in third place.
The student of the Faculty of Chemistry is currently in his fourth semester and prepared for the tournament without a fixed club. He organised his training independently and combined running, strength and boxing sessions. He was supported by remote coaching from his former trainer in India and the USA.
Maharathh started boxing in 2017 and what was initially intended to help him overcome his shyness quickly developed into a great passion. "Boxing gives me calm and self-control. The sport motivates me to work consistently on my goals," he says.
For him, combining studies and competitive sport requires a high degree of discipline and organisation. He uses free time between lectures to study in the university library before devoting himself to sport.
Maharathh already has clear goals for the future: "Next year, I would like to win gold for HSNR. I would like to help set up a permanent boxing team at our university so that we can compete together at the adh and DHM boxing championships next year."
"Being involved in sport alongside your studies is a great benefit - both for the personal development of students and for community life at HSNR. The German University Championships organised by the adh offer the opportunity to represent universities at national level in numerous competitive sports. We are therefore happy to welcome any student who plays a sport at a competitive level and would like to represent our university. Both the university administration and the AStA support our athletes to the best of their ability and greatly appreciate this special commitment," says Adrian Dobnik, Sports Officer of the General Students' Committee (AStA) of The Hochschule Niederrhein.
