Red Dot Award: International design prize for Krefeld alumnus

The designer and alumnus of the Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR), Michael Grandt, has been honoured with one of the most internationally renowned design prizes, the "Red Dot Award". Grandt received the prize for his "Mylla" vase series.

Mylla is a family of three ceramic vases, a tall, a wide and an oval shape, each available in three different glazes. "The design combines clear lines and strictly geometric basic shapes with softly flowing surfaces and textured, silk-matt glazes, which lend the otherwise minimalist design a sensual depth," says Michael Grandt, who studied design at the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and now works as a freelance designer with his own studio "Omote Ura Product Design" in Düsseldorf.

The award-winning Mylla vases are handmade in Portugal and distributed by the design label "Born in Sweden". They can also be admired in Essen: There they are part of the exhibition of the award winners in the "Red Dot" Museum.

However, designer Michael Grandt was not only honoured for the Mylla vases at the "Red Dot Award": As a newcomer, he was successful in the competition for one of the coveted exhibition spaces at the "Salone del Mobile" in Milan, the world's largest furniture fair and therefore an important showcase for design and interior trends. The trade fair is known for its large selection of furniture, lighting and accessories and attracts an international trade audience. "I had the chance to show my designs at the so-called 'Salone Satellite', a platform for design newcomers within the trade fair," says Michael Grandt.

He brought four design prototypes with him to Milan: a series of pendant lights with cork details, a table lamp made of translucent porcelain, a stool made of laminated wood and a coat rack made of tubular steel. "The trade fair was a great opportunity to network and make promising contacts." A total of 120 design newcomers from all over the world were present in Milan.

Incidentally, "Designkrefelder", i.e. graduates of the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences design programme, have repeatedly managed to present themselves at the "Salone del Mobile" in recent years.
