Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.
Jonas Becher, Dr. Anne Mollen and Dr. Jessica Szczuka (from left to right) speak at the KI Ring event.

Ring event highlights social aspects of artificial intelligence

Artificial intelligence (AI) is already part of our everyday lives and will increasingly shape them. The rapid technical advances in this field will lead to upheavals in various areas of social life, from private life to studies, apprenticeships and the world of work.

The Hochschule Niederrhein's AI Transdisciplinary project is therefore offering a three-part series of events in which experts from various disciplines and industries will shed light on issues arising from the introduction of artificial intelligence into society at large. The events are open to the public and free of charge, registration is requested: ringveranstaltung-ki(at)hs-niederrhein.de

Jonas Becher, graduate of The Hochschule Niederrhein and founder, sheds light on the transformative potential of artificial intelligence for a sustainable future. Using concrete application scenarios, he will outline how artificial intelligence can sustainably improve life in our society, but also where the limits of this technology lie and what ethical dimensions are associated with its use.

Speaker: Jonas Becher, CEO Masasana GmbH

When: Monday, 29.04.2024, 16.00-17.30 hrs.

Where: Krefeld South Campus, Building J, Room E17

"Dirt slinging AI - automation down to earth"

AI technologies are often portrayed as supposed magic that can miraculously produce impressive results. The fact that this magic often requires vast amounts of human labor under precarious working conditions, which is outsourced to African countries, for example, is not usually part of this narrative.

At the same time, AI systems are not produced in a spherical cloud, but in huge data centers that require immense amounts of energy, materials and water. It is time to bring AI technologies down to earth. Because they have an impact on us all, and not just because of their production conditions and resource consumption.

They are increasingly being used to make decisions about us - for example in our working lives. We therefore need a comprehensive discussion on how AI can be developed in a way that is oriented towards the common good and not just in the interests of large technology companies.

Speaker: Dr. Anne Mollen, Institute for Communication Science, University of Münster; Senior Research Associate Algorithm Watch

When: Monday, 06.05.2024, 16.00-17.30 h

Where: Digital/Zoom (access data will be sent by email after registration)

"Of dating apps and sex robots: Intimacy through and with AI"

Speaker: Dr. Jessica Szczuka; Research Associate at the Department of Social Psychology at the University of Duisburg-Essen

When: Monday, 13.05.2024, 16.00-17.30 hrs.
