"What you don't see" exhibition sheds light on everyday racism and its effects

From Monday, 7 April, the travelling exhibition "Was ihr nicht seht" (What you don't see) by Dominik Lucha will be on display in the Z building on the Mönchengladbach campus of the Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences (Richard-Wagner-Straße 89-99). The exhibition, which is open until 12 April, sheds light on the often invisible everyday racism experienced by black people and people of colour in Germany. It is open Monday to Friday from 6.30 am to 9 pm and on Saturdays from 7.30 am to 4.30 pm.

Examples of everyday racism are visualised on black text panels. The statements are intended to sensitise visitors and stimulate discussion about the various forms and effects of racism. "What you don't see" is not just an exhibition - it is an impulse for critical self-reflection, an invitation to act together and a statement in favour of open, inclusive coexistence in Mönchengladbach and on campus.

The public finissage of the exhibition will take place on 10 April 2025 from 3 pm under the title "RAP against forgetting". Kutlu Yurtseven, rapper from the Cologne-based group Microphone Mafia, will be performing. Yurtseven, who also works as a teacher and social worker, has made a name for himself since the 1990s not only as a musician but also as a remembrance worker. In the past, he has performed with Auschwitz survivor and singer Esther Bejerano, among others. He grew up near the hairdressing salon on Keupstraße in Cologne-Mülheim, in front of whose shop the nail bomb of the right-wing extremist National Socialist Underground (NSU) exploded in 2004. He talks about life on Keupstraße before and after the attack and the significance of the memorial for local residents.

The travelling exhibition is part of the International Weeks against Racism 2025 and a cooperation between the city of Mönchengladbach and the Department of University Culture and Diversity at Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences.
