Mönchengladbach/Krefeld. The talent scouting programme run by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia has been operating at the Hochschule Niederrhein for two years. Twenty-six secondary schools from Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and the district of Viersen are now taking part in the programme. The talent scouts Moana Hofmann, Laura Köhnen and Stephanie Patzner regularly advise pupils from Year 11 onwards on site and, where necessary, support them beyond their school-leaving qualifications.
The focus is on the young people’s specific individual strengths, interests and life circumstances. It is not just about academic performance. Social engagement, family responsibilities or particular extracurricular interests can also provide important insights into personal talents.
“As points of contact, we are on hand to advise the young people and support them in developing their future prospects,” says talent scout Moana Hofmann. Depending on their needs, the young people are also supported during their apprenticeship or studies. “Our counselling sessions are always open-ended. The young people decide for themselves whether studies, a dual degree programme or vocational training is the right choice for them,” explains Laura Köhnen. Finding the right path is often a challenge given the wide range of Degree programmes and careers on offer.
Over the past two years, the HSNR’s regional network of schools, social institutions and businesses has also grown steadily as a result of the talent scouting programme. The diverse perspectives and expertise are incorporated into the support offered to the young people.
“Through their long-term support of these talented young people, our talent scouts become their mentors. Thanks to this close support, they gain a comprehensive overall picture of the pupils. Through their counselling, they specifically help students recognise their own strengths and potential. This is a key competency essential for making a successful choice of career or degree programme,” explains Dilek Tekin, Head of the Central Student Advice Service at HSNR.
