In a relaxed atmosphere, the short lecture dealt with the various activities of NIERS and scientific work in general, exemplified by the project "R3 - Regional.Responsibility.Resonance.".

On April 24, a workshop with colleagues from Karazin Business School (Kharkiv, Ukraine) took place together with HNX. The focus was on getting to know each other as part of a Design Dash workshop at HNX. This involves working in teams to find a solution to a given problem that reflects the needs and wishes of all participants and teams.

The annual Girls Day took place on Thursday, 25.04.2024. On this day, nine girls between the ages of 11 and 17 had the opportunity to experience the day-to-day work of a professor at NIERS for a day. In addition to a workshop on the topic of "Attractiveness of Cities", the day was rounded off with a visit to the Office of the Dean, a tour of the campus and a brief insight into a lecture.

On April 1, 2024, NIERS launched a new BMBF-funded project entitled "Graduate Cluster AUFBRUCH - Shaping the transformation to a sustainable regional bioeconomy". Over the next four years, together with partners from RWTH Aachen, FH Aachen, TU Dortmund, HHU Düsseldorf, FZ Jülich, TH Köln, as well as colleagues from GEMIT (Prof. Dr. Beckmann) and the Faculty of Chemistry (Prof.in Dr.in Bergstedt) based at HSNR, the aim is to actively shape the transformation of the Rhenish mining area into a model region for a sustainable and competitive bioeconomy.
NIERS examines the regional economic potential of novel carboxylic acid esters with a focus on land requirements and availability for the biomass to be cultivated; the existence of corresponding economic sectors in the central Niederrhein region; job supply and demand in these sectors; the economic viability, potential and implications of a regional bioeconomy; and the role of universities.

We are delighted to welcome Ebru Sarikaya as a new colleague at NIERS. Ms. Sarikaya completed her Master's degree in Business Administration and Economics with a specialization in "Management & Marketing" at the University of Wuppertal and then worked at Commerzbank AG, first as a corporate client advisor and then as Manager Corporate Banking. Since 2020, she has been employed at the Institute for SME Research at the University of Mannheim and has been working on her doctorate on the topic of "Aspiring Entrepreneurs in Germany - Potentials and Pitfalls in the Start-Up Process" at the Chair of SME Research and Entrepreneurship since 2023.
At NIERS, Ms. Sarikaya will primarily focus on the topics of entrepreneurship and regional development.

On March 6th 2024, Prof. Dr. Angelika Krehl gave a keynote speech on the topic of "Spaces need innovation. Innovations need space" at the symposium "Regionalpolitischer Aufbruch in NRW" and then further advanced the impulses in a panel discussion with, among others, the President of Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Schramm-Wölk, Michael Bison from the Association of Economic Development and Development Companies NRW and state parliament member Romina Plonsker.
The event took place at the Seifenfabrik in the Schwanenhöfe in Düsseldorf, to which around 180 experts from science and practice were invited. The participants exchanged views on new goals, current challenges and the future direction of regional policy. You can find a review of the program here.

On February 21, 2024, the transfer advisory board of the R³ project met for the second time to discuss previous milestones and further research work with the project team. After a review of the past six months of the project, the researchers presented the selection of case studies on social innovations in Mönchengladbach and Krefeld that are to be supported as part of the project. The advisory board members, most of whom are professionally based in Mönchengladbach and Krefeld, were asked to discuss the selection of cases with their field and specialist expertise. The project team will now review and finalize the case selection following this constructive feedback. On this basis, the empirical work will begin in the spring. A new meeting of this committee is planned for the end of 2024. The presentation on the content presented can be found here.

Dr. Anna Herzog (postdoc at NIERS and in the R³ project) took part in the lecture series "On the significance of spaces, places and regions" with a one-hour lecture on the topic of "Taking responsibility for the spatial environment together: the secret of resonance and self-efficacy?". This is aimed at interested parties from all disciplines throughout the university as well as participants in the FAUSTplus guest auditor program of The Hochschule Niederrhein - continuing education and dialogue between young and old. A good 30 participants listened to the clear explanations of the theoretical background to the project, the methodological approach and initial findings from the pilot study on the Dahlia citizens' initiative and engaged in a lively Q&A session with the speaker.

In the current expenditure of #dnh (6 | 2023) Angelika Krehl, Martina Wintgen and Moritz Heß have published an article on the topic "Sustainable learning through teaching education and research projects at The Hochschule Niederrhein." published. The Hochschule Niederrhein's Faculties of Business Administration and Economics and Applied Social Sciences have been working on this project over the past semesters.
Many thanks to all the students who attended, the project funding via the VP-I of The Hochschule Niederrhein, Berthold Stegemerten, and the Hochschullehrerbund - Bundesvereinigung e. V. for the publication opportunity.

On December 13, 2023, the members of the scientific advisory board met for the second time to reflect on the findings to date with the project team. After a brief review of the past six months of the project, the researchers presented the selection of case studies and the survey instruments for the empirical work.
In the lively discussion with the advisory board members present, Prof. Dr. Suntje Schmidt (IRS Erkner), Dr. Stefan Schneider (Difu Berlin) and Dr. Sabine Weck (ILS Dortmund), many valuable impulses for the further methodological approach were again gained. The continuation of this valuable exchange is planned for late summer 2024.

With the help of this student survey, the Erasmus+ project ENDORSE wants to find out what students think about starting their own business. Can they imagine starting their own business? What opportunities and risks do they see? And do students think that the university region is a suitable location for starting a business?
The aim of the project is to strengthen European university locations affected by brain drain by providing a concept to promote the entrepreneurial activities of students during and after their studies.

We are pleased to have welcomed Dr. Michael Henze, Head of Department 5 - Economic Development, Central Contact for Municipal Economic Development from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Dr. Jonas Keil from the same department to NIERS on 22.11.2023. There was a lively exchange on opportunities for cooperation and collaboration and selected projects were discussed and fleshed out.

Under the motto "Planetary Futures", the 62nd German Congress of Geography (DKG) took place in Frankfurt am Main from September 19 to 23, 2023. Angelika Krehl and Ann Marie Krewer gave a presentation as part of the project "R³ - Regional.Responsibility.Resonance: Innovations through CSR" on the topic "What happens before innovation? Research support for a bottom-up initiative". In addition, Christina Masch and Angelika Krehl presented the first results from the pretest of a student survey on the topic of "Promoting the development of entrepreneurial strategies at higher education and university locations: Interest in start-ups among students in structurally weak regions". The student survey is part of the Erasmus+ project "ENDORSE".

Status conference of the BMBF funding measure "Researching regional factors for innovation and change - strengthening social innovation capacity" as part of the "REGION.innovativ" funding measure
From August 31 to September 1, 2023, the first status meeting of all 14 projects within the framework of the "REGION.innovativ" funding measure took place at the new DLR site at Berlin Südkreuz. The aim was to exchange ideas between the thematically similar and yet very diverse research projects. The project team from "R³ - Regional. Responsibility, Resonance: Innovations through CRR" (R³) was also represented by Angelika Krehl and Anna Herzog. The focus was on a 10-minute presentation of the individual projects based on three key questions on the understanding of innovation, the project goals and the section "What do we offer? What are we looking for?". In addition to the project presentations, various exchange formats were offered, including a World Café on the understanding, challenges and success factors of social innovation capability and social innovation, a workshop on the topic of innovation actors - mapping, roles, challenges and potentials for innovation success and a presentation on success factors for transfer. The discussions with other scientists on the fringes of the conference were also particularly enriching, especially on how to deal with resonance theory and planned transfer formats.

Angelika Krehl and Anna Herzog participated in this year's European Urban Research Association (EURA) conference with a presentation on "Once you see and feel it makes a difference. A Conceptual Framework and Measurement Approach to Capturing Resonance and Self-Efficacy as Drivers for Social Innovation and Resilience". The content of the presentation was developed as part of the research project R³ - Regional.Responsibility. Resonance: Innovations through CRR. A publication is in preparation. The conference took place from June 22 to 24, 2023 at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, Iceland and was held under the theme "The European City: A practice of resilience in the face of an uncertain future".

On June 14, 2023, the first meeting of the transfer advisory board in the project "R³ - Regional. Responsibility, Resonance: Innovations through CRR" (R³) took place. The six advisory board members present included Anna Appenzeller (Krefeld Business), Elke Ariens (City of Mönchengladbach), Wolfgang Ropertz (City of Krefeld), Sebastian Schmetz (City of Krefeld), Heinrich Wallrafen (Sozialholding Mönchengladbach) and Roman Wolf (Netzwerk Nachhaltigkeit LAG 21). They were first given an overview of the initial situation, motivation and objectives of the project as well as the conceptual framework and methodological approach. The presentation of the case study work on the "Initiative Dahlien Mönchengladbach. Young initiative of committed residents in Dahl" in Mönchengladbach provided a first insight into the practical application and the planned empirical research. The subsequent discussion resulted in valuable suggestions and pointers for further possible case studies in Mönchengladbach and Krefeld. The advisory board meeting was documented using graphic recording by Thinking Visual (Katrina Günther).
The next advisory board meeting is planned for early 2024.

On May 03, 2023, the first meeting of the scientific advisory board in the project "R³ - Regional. Responsibility. Resonance: Innovations through CRR" (R³) took place. On March 9, 2023 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., the final event of the TransLOek project on the topic of "Economic Sideshows in Functional Change" took place at the Textile Academy NRW in Mönchengladbach.
The program included two keynote speeches by Prof. Dr. Knut Koschatzky (Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI) and Dr. Michael Behling (Behling-Consult) as well as the opportunity to exchange ideas in the World Café on the topics of "Image and Events", "Migrant Economy" and "Networking".

The ninth and final meeting of the Competence Network Local Economy in the Lower Rhine region took place on January 31, 2023 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The topic of this meeting was "Events in the neighborhood - a promising approach to strengthening neighborhoods and the local economy?".

On November 2, 2022, NIERS employee Anna Herzog successfully completed her doctorate on the topic of "Development paths and structural change in old industrial medium-sized cities: The example of Mönchengladbach" with her disputation. The doctorate was supervised by Prof. Dr. Matthias Kiese from the Geographical Institute at Ruhr-Universität Bochum and Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Hamm, the former head of the Niederrhein Institute for Regional and Structural Research (NIERS).
Anna Herzog has been a research associate at NIERS since 2016 and has since focused on transformation processes in the local economy and the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on local economies.

This enables companies to present themselves as attractive employers for high potentials and make their services and products better known across the border.

The former NIERS employee Dr. phil. Katja Keggenhoff was distinguished for her doctorate by the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics in the 2020 summer semester. The topic of her dissertation is: "With the watering can to the grass roots? An investigation of participatory activities in urban development using the example of two economically and socially disadvantaged neighborhoods in Solingen and Viersen". Ms. Keggenhoff was employed at NIERS from 2012 to 2018...
The dissertation has been published in the publication series of the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics...

As part of the "Education, Economy, Work in the Neighbourhood" program, structurally weak neighbourhoods are supported in activities for labour market integration and strengthening the local economy in a social space-oriented manner. In cooperation with the SoCon institute, NIERS is working on the sub-project "Südstadthandel 2.0 - strengthening local strengths, initiating new ideas". The project partners are the city of Viersen and the Brückenbau e.V. initiative. The project is expected to run until 31.12.2022.

As part of the "TransLOek" project, a flash survey was conducted among small and micro enterprises in structurally weak neighborhoods in five cities in the region. According to the results, the companies are suffering considerably from the consequences of the lockdown declared in mid-March.

The 19th NIERS Regional Economic Forum will take place in Krefeld on June 21/22, 2022. This year, it will be held together with the SO.CON Institute of The Hochschule Niederrhein and as a cooperation event with the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR) and the BIWAQ workshop coordinated by it.
Under the title "Perspectives and challenges of disadvantaged neighborhoods", our work from two ongoing BIWAQ projects will be presented on 21.06.2022 as part of the Regional Economic Forum. They will be complemented by the work of external experts. As usual, the aim here is scientific exchange.
On the second day - the BIWAQ workshop on 22.06.2022 - the focus will be on the exchange of experience and knowledge with all participating BIWAQ projects dealing with issues of strengthening the local economy.

As part of the Interreg project "euregio campus Limburg/Lower Rhine", seven short films have been made about the university locations Mönchengladbach, Krefeld and Venlo. All of the city portraits focus on the region's employer landscape, leisure opportunities and quality of life. The focus is on the advantages of the cross-border knowledge region.
The films feature young people who tell why they stayed in the region after their studies or why they moved to the region for their job and career.
The films are available on the euregiocampus website or on the euregio campus YouTube channel.

Gerrit Heinemann, professor of retail at The Hochschule Niederrhein and e-commerce specialist, gave a lecture on "Survival strategies for the retail sector" on February 2. With 150 registrations, the lecture series in digital format attracted a great deal of attention, even beyond the Middle Lower Rhine region. Participants were given the opportunity to ask the expert questions afterwards.

Project "TransLoek": On October 8, 2020, the 2nd meeting of the competence center Local Economy on the Lower Rhine took place, this time on the topic "Vacancy or potential areas? Paths in functional change" took place. The event with around 50 participants served to exchange experiences and collect ideas on how to deal with commercial vacancies.

Students from The Hochschule Niederrhein and Fontys International Business School are conducting a joint research project as part of two courses as part of the Interreg project "euregio campus - Limburg/Lower Rhine". With the help of citizen surveys, they want to find out how the universities in Krefeld and Venlo are perceived by the inhabitants of the cities. The Hochschule Niederrhein held the kick-off meeting for the project on Monday, September 23, 2019. The results of the surveys will be presented at a joint event in December.

Since the beginning of the year, the Niederrhein Institute for Regional and Structural Research (NIERS) has been working with six partners to raise the profile of the euregio rhein-maas-nord as a cross-border education region. The project partners are the cities of Krefeld, Mönchengladbach and Venlo, the WFMG and the WFG Krefeld as well as the Fontys International Business School in Venlo. The project is being carried out as part of the INTERREG Germany-Nederland program and will run for three years (1.1.19 - 31.12.21).

On April 20, the TransLOek project activities to date were presented to representatives from universities and colleges in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse, Thuringia and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). This was followed by a joint brainstorming session to create a mind map on the determinants of change processes at neighborhood level.

The project "BIWAQ IV - Sub-project: Südstadthandel 2.0 Strengthening local strengths, initiating new ideas" supports the sticker campaign "5 stars for your shopping". The sticker campaign launched by Viersen city management and Werbering Viersen together with local retailers supports local shopping in the districts of Viersen. More than 60 retailers are taking part in the campaign.

As part of the "TransLOek" project, a second survey (following a first survey in March) was conducted in July 2020 among small and micro enterprises in structurally weak neighborhoods in five cities in the region. As part of the BIWAQ IV project in the south and city center of Viersen, an exchange on founding will take place on November 17 from 6 to 8 p.m. in the greenhouse in Viersen, especially for women interested in founding a business and new female founders. The event is part of the first "Gründerwoche Niederrhein" (Lower Rhine Start-up Week), during which numerous events on the topic of starting a business will be offered from November 14 to 21 in the "Gründerregion Niederrhein" (which includes Mönchengladbach, Krefeld, the district of Viersen and the Rhine district of Neuss).

Prof. Dr. Rüdiger Hamm and Anna Herzog attended this year's ERSA conference with a presentation on "A Masterplan for Urban Resurgence - The Case of Mönchengladbach and MG 3.0". The conference took place from August 25 to 27, 2020 and was held under the theme "Spatial challenges for the New World". Due to the coronavirus, the conference was held as a web conference for the first time this year.

The first meeting with the scientific advisory board for the TransLOek project took place on May 12, 2020 - in digital form due to corona. The TranslOek advisory board includes experts from universities and colleges in North Rhine-Westphalia, Hesse and Thuringia, the RWI-Leibniz Institute for Economic Research and the Federal Institute for Research on Building, Urban Affairs and Spatial Development (BBSR). The project was first introduced at the meeting. At the start of this expert round, there was a (primary) exchange on what is meant by local economy and which companies should be included. Important milestones for future collaboration were also defined. Another meeting in this round is planned for November 2020.

The aim of the "euregio campus - Limburg/Lower Rhine" project is to raise the profile of the euregio rhine-maas-north as a cross-border education region. The project will be presented at the dialog event "NRW.Dialog.BENELUX" (Saturday, September 14, Fabrik Heeder in Krefeld). The event is part of the NRW-Benelux Year 2019 with the aim of discussing future cooperation with Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg with citizens.

"The importance of universities for regional development" was the title of an introductory lecture given by Prof. Dr. Hamm at this year's 95th Federal Conference of Deans of Business Administration and Economics. The conference took place from June 5-7, 2019 at The Hochschule Niederrhein in Mönchengladbach. Her specialist program was dedicated to the topic "How to match? The demand-oriented development of degree programs as a link between university and business".

The 58th ERSA conference took place in Cork Ireland from August 28 to 31, 2018. NIERS was represented with five presentations at the conference under the theme "Places for People: Innovative, inclusive and Livable Regions".
