Lecture as part of the Campus Week

On May 21, 2024, NIERS offered students a lecture on "Insight into the work of a research institute" as part of The Hochschule Niederrhein's Campus Week. In addition to the current activities of NIERS, the focus was also on scientific work in general and interdisciplinarity.

NIERS at the open day

On May 15, 2024, NIERS offered interested parties the opportunity to gain an insight into the work of a research institute as part of The Hochschule Niederrhein's Open Day. In a relaxed atmosphere, the short lecture dealt with the various activities of NIERS and scientific work in general, exemplified by the project "R3 - Regional.Responsibility.Resonance.".

Workshop with the Karazin Business Schoo

On April 24, a workshop with colleagues from Karazin Business School (Kharkiv, Ukraine) took place together with HNX. The focus was on getting to know each other as part of a Design Dash workshop at HNX. This involves working in teams to find a solution to a given problem that reflects the needs and wishes of all participants and teams.

Girls Day 2024

06.05.2024

The annual Girls Day took place on Thursday, 25.04.2024. On this day, nine girls between the ages of 11 and 17 had the opportunity to experience the day-to-day work of a professor at NIERS for a day. In addition to a workshop on the topic of "Attractiveness of Cities", the day was rounded off with a visit to the Office of the Dean, a tour of the campus and a brief insight into a lecture.

Project start Graduate Cluster AUFBRUCH

On April 1, 2024, NIERS launched a new BMBF-funded project entitled "Graduate Cluster AUFBRUCH - Shaping the transformation to a sustainable regional bioeconomy". Over the next four years, together with partners from RWTH Aachen, FH Aachen, TU Dortmund, HHU Düsseldorf, FZ Jülich, TH Köln, as well as colleagues from GEMIT (Prof. Dr. Beckmann) and the Faculty of Chemistry (Prof.in Dr.in Bergstedt) based at HSNR, the aim is to actively shape the transformation of the Rhenish mining area into a model region for a sustainable and competitive bioeconomy.

NIERS examines the regional economic potential of novel carboxylic acid esters with a focus on land requirements and availability for the biomass to be cultivated; the existence of corresponding economic sectors in the central Niederrhein region; job supply and demand in these sectors; the economic viability, potential and implications of a regional bioeconomy; and the role of universities.

New colleague at NIERS

We are delighted to welcome Ebru Sarikaya as a new colleague at NIERS. Ms. Sarikaya completed her Master's degree in Business Administration and Economics with a specialization in "Management & Marketing" at the University of Wuppertal and then worked at Commerzbank AG, first as a corporate client advisor and then as Manager Corporate Banking. Since 2020, she has been employed at the Institute for SME Research at the University of Mannheim and has been working on her doctorate on the topic of "Aspiring Entrepreneurs in Germany - Potentials and Pitfalls in the Start-Up Process" at the Chair of SME Research and Entrepreneurship since 2023.

At NIERS, Ms. Sarikaya will primarily focus on the topics of entrepreneurship and regional development.

Regional political awakening in NRW

On March 6th 2024, Prof. Dr. Angelika Krehl gave a keynote speech on the topic of "Spaces need innovation. Innovations need space" at the symposium "Regionalpolitischer Aufbruch in NRW" and then further advanced the impulses in a panel discussion with, among others, the President of Bielefeld University of Applied Sciences, Prof. Dr. Ingeborg Schramm-Wölk, Michael Bison from the Association of Economic Development and Development Companies NRW and state parliament member Romina Plonsker.

The event took place at the Seifenfabrik in the Schwanenhöfe in Düsseldorf, to which around 180 experts from science and practice were invited. The participants exchanged views on new goals, current challenges and the future direction of regional policy. You can find a review of the program here.

Transfer advisory board in the R³ projec

05.03.2024

On February 21, 2024, the transfer advisory board of the R³ project met for the second time to discuss previous milestones and further research work with the project team. After a review of the past six months of the project, the researchers presented the selection of case studies on social innovations in Mönchengladbach and Krefeld that are to be supported as part of the project. The advisory board members, most of whom are professionally based in Mönchengladbach and Krefeld, were asked to discuss the selection of cases with their field and specialist expertise. The project team will now review and finalize the case selection following this constructive feedback. On this basis, the empirical work will begin in the spring. A new meeting of this committee is planned for the end of 2024. The presentation on the content presented can be found here.

R³ Guest lecture at lecture series

18.01.2024, Mönchengladbach, hybrid

Dr. Anna Herzog (postdoc at NIERS and in the R³ project) took part in the lecture series "On the significance of spaces, places and regions" with a one-hour lecture on the topic of "Taking responsibility for the spatial environment together: the secret of resonance and self-efficacy?". This is aimed at interested parties from all disciplines throughout the university as well as participants in the FAUSTplus guest auditor program of The Hochschule Niederrhein - continuing education and dialogue between young and old. A good 30 participants listened to the clear explanations of the theoretical background to the project, the methodological approach and initial findings from the pilot study on the Dahlia citizens' initiative and engaged in a lively Q&A session with the speaker.

Sustainable learning

In the current expenditure of #dnh (6 | 2023) Angelika Krehl, Martina Wintgen and Moritz Heß have published an article on the topic "Sustainable learning through teaching education and research projects at The Hochschule Niederrhein." published. The Hochschule Niederrhein's Faculties of Business Administration and Economics and Applied Social Sciences have been working on this project over the past semesters.

Many thanks to all the students who attended, the project funding via the VP-I of The Hochschule Niederrhein, Berthold Stegemerten, and the Hochschullehrerbund - Bundesvereinigung e. V. for the publication opportunity.

Scientific advisory board for the R³ pro

On December 13, 2023, the members of the scientific advisory board met for the second time to reflect on the findings to date with the project team. After a brief review of the past six months of the project, the researchers presented the selection of case studies and the survey instruments for the empirical work.
In the lively discussion with the advisory board members present, Prof. Dr. Suntje Schmidt (IRS Erkner), Dr. Stefan Schneider (Difu Berlin) and Dr. Sabine Weck (ILS Dortmund), many valuable impulses for the further methodological approach were again gained. The continuation of this valuable exchange is planned for late summer 2024.

Student survey "Entrepreneurship"

With the help of this student survey, the Erasmus+ project ENDORSE wants to find out what students think about starting their own business. Can they imagine starting their own business? What opportunities and risks do they see? And do students think that the university region is a suitable location for starting a business?

The aim of the project is to strengthen European university locations affected by brain drain by providing a concept to promote the entrepreneurial activities of students during and after their studies.

New cooperations

We are pleased to have welcomed Dr. Michael Henze, Head of Department 5 - Economic Development, Central Contact for Municipal Economic Development from the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia, and Dr. Jonas Keil from the same department to NIERS on 22.11.2023. There was a lively exchange on opportunities for cooperation and collaboration and selected projects were discussed and fleshed out.

We look to the future with enthusiasm.

Participation in DKG '23 in Frankfurt/Ma

Under the motto "Planetary Futures", the 62nd German Congress of Geography (DKG) took place in Frankfurt am Main from September 19 to 23, 2023. Angelika Krehl and Ann Marie Krewer gave a presentation as part of the project "R³ - Regional.Responsibility.Resonance: Innovations through CSR" on the topic "What happens before innovation? Research support for a bottom-up initiative". In addition, Christina Masch and Angelika Krehl presented the first results from the pretest of a student survey on the topic of "Promoting the development of entrepreneurial strategies at higher education and university locations: Interest in start-ups among students in structurally weak regions". The student survey is part of the Erasmus+ project "ENDORSE".

Region.innovative" status conference

31.08.-01.09.2023, Berlin

Status conference of the BMBF funding measure "Researching regional factors for innovation and change - strengthening social innovation capacity" as part of the "REGION.innovativ" funding measure

From August 31 to September 1, 2023, the first status meeting of all 14 projects within the framework of the "REGION.innovativ" funding measure took place at the new DLR site at Berlin Südkreuz. The aim was to exchange ideas between the thematically similar and yet very diverse research projects. The project team from "R³ - Regional. Responsibility, Resonance: Innovations through CRR" (R³) was also represented by Angelika Krehl and Anna Herzog. The focus was on a 10-minute presentation of the individual projects based on three key questions on the understanding of innovation, the project goals and the section "What do we offer? What are we looking for?". In addition to the project presentations, various exchange formats were offered, including a World Café on the understanding, challenges and success factors of social innovation capability and social innovation, a workshop on the topic of innovation actors - mapping, roles, challenges and potentials for innovation success and a presentation on success factors for transfer. The discussions with other scientists on the fringes of the conference were also particularly enriching, especially on how to deal with resonance theory and planned transfer formats.

Presentation at the EURA Conference 2023

Angelika Krehl and Anna Herzog participated in this year's European Urban Research Association (EURA) conference with a presentation on "Once you see and feel it makes a difference. A Conceptual Framework and Measurement Approach to Capturing Resonance and Self-Efficacy as Drivers for Social Innovation and Resilience". The content of the presentation was developed as part of the research project R³ - Regional.Responsibility. Resonance: Innovations through CRR. A publication is in preparation. The conference took place from June 22 to 24, 2023 at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik, Iceland and was held under the theme "The European City: A practice of resilience in the face of an uncertain future".

Transfer advisory board in the R³ projec

On June 14, 2023, the first meeting of the transfer advisory board in the project "R³ - Regional. Responsibility, Resonance: Innovations through CRR" (R³) took place. The six advisory board members present included Anna Appenzeller (Krefeld Business), Elke Ariens (City of Mönchengladbach), Wolfgang Ropertz (City of Krefeld), Sebastian Schmetz (City of Krefeld), Heinrich Wallrafen (Sozialholding Mönchengladbach) and Roman Wolf (Netzwerk Nachhaltigkeit LAG 21). They were first given an overview of the initial situation, motivation and objectives of the project as well as the conceptual framework and methodological approach. The presentation of the case study work on the "Initiative Dahlien Mönchengladbach. Young initiative of committed residents in Dahl" in Mönchengladbach provided a first insight into the practical application and the planned empirical research. The subsequent discussion resulted in valuable suggestions and pointers for further possible case studies in Mönchengladbach and Krefeld. The advisory board meeting was documented using graphic recording by Thinking Visual (Katrina Günther).

The next advisory board meeting is planned for early 2024.

On May 03, 2023, the first meeting of the scientific advisory board in the project "R³ - Regional. Responsibility. Resonance: Innovations through CRR" (R³) took place. The advisory board members present, Prof. Dr. Suntje Schmidt (IRS Erkner), Dr. Stefan Schneider (Difu Berlin) and Dr. Sabine Weck (ILS Dortmund), were given an overview of the initial situation, the objectives and the conceptual framework of the project as well as the existing project network and the planned transfer of knowledge and findings. The subsequent discussion, in particular on the objectives and the methodological approach, provided the project team with exciting insights and new starting points for further work on the project. TransLOek closing event

27.02.2023

On March 9, 2023 from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m., the final event of the TransLOek project on the topic of "Economic Sideshows in Functional Change" took place at the Textile Academy NRW in Mönchengladbach.
The program included two keynote speeches by Prof. Dr. Knut Koschatzky (Fraunhofer Institute for Systems and Innovation Research ISI) and Dr. Michael Behling (Behling-Consult) as well as the opportunity to exchange ideas in the World Café on the topics of "Image and Events", "Migrant Economy" and "Networking".

Competence center TransLOek - 9th meetin

The ninth and final meeting of the Competence Network Local Economy in the Lower Rhine region took place on January 31, 2023 from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The topic of this meeting was "Events in the neighborhood - a promising approach to strengthening neighborhoods and the local economy?".
