International Weeks against Racism in cooperation with the City of Krefeld
"Birth under Prejudice - Experiences of Racism of Black Women in Obstetrics"
The lecture addresses anti-Black racism in obstetrics and combines theoretical foundation courses with health effects and concrete experiences of those affected. At the beginning, racism and its various forms and dimensions will be explained. Building on this, the effects of racist experiences on physical and mental health are presented. The focus will then be on the experiences of Black women in obstetrics, based on the results of a qualitative study conducted as part of a Bachelor's thesis. This will reveal how anti-Black racism is experienced in the obstetric context and what consequences this can have for care, safety and self-determination. The aim of the lecture is to raise awareness of racism in obstetrics and to encourage a critical examination of existing structures and experiences.
As a Black midwife, Leonie Okafor combines professional knowledge with a personal perspective on structural inequalities in the care surrounding pregnancy and birth.
