Start of the AUFBRUCH graduate cluster project

Start of the new BMBF-funded project

On 1 April 2024, NIERS launched a new BMBF-funded project entitled "Graduate Cluster AUFBRUCH - Shaping the transformation to a sustainable regional bioeconomy". Over the next four years, together with partners from RWTH Aachen University, FH Aachen, TU Dortmund University, HHU Düsseldorf, FZ Jülich, TH Köln, as well as colleagues from GEMIT (Prof. Dr Beckmann) and the Faculty of Chemistry (Prof. Dr Bergstedt) based at HSNR, the aim is to actively shape the transformation of the Rhenish mining area into a model region for a sustainable and competitive bioeconomy.

NIERS examines the regional economic potential of novel carboxylic acid esters with a focus on land requirements and availability for the biomass to be cultivated; the existence of corresponding economic sectors in the central Niederrhein region; job supply and demand in these economic sectors; the economic viability, potential and implications of a regional bioeconomy; and the role of universities.
