Scientific impetus for regional development: NIERS at the ERDF/JTF Conference 2026 in Essen

On 20 February 2026, NIERS was represented at the ERDF/JTF Conference 2026 at the Zeche Zollverein in Essen.

The conference focussed on promoting regional development and transformation in North Rhine-Westphalia.

In her invited lecture "Regional transformation processes in North Rhine-Westphalia. An impulse from science", Prof Dr Angelika Krehl presented key scientific perspectives for discussion and highlighted the prerequisites for a successful transformation.

It became clear that transformation processes are dependent on innovation and resources and at the same time generate new resources and development potential. Innovation, existing resources and the resulting potential were categorised as closely interlinked components of regional development.

From NIERS research, she addressed results from the R(h)einTex, R³ - Regional.Responsibility.Resonance and AUFBRUCH projects. The circularity of textiles, social innovations and networks as well as approaches to innovations in the economic model, including R-strategies and co-production, were discussed.
