NIERS Discussion Papers

Aims and Scope

The NIERS - Niederrhein Institute for Regional and Structural Research (NIERS) publishes its own series of so-called Discussion Papers.

With the "NIERS Discussion Papers on Regional Economic Research", NIERS invites academic discussion within the university, with the national and international scientific community and with our cooperation and practice partners.

The discussion papers offer NIERS researchers and practice partners a medium in which they can publish their work and put it up for discussion. Reports from ongoing NIERS research projects and those of its partners are also included.

Very good studies, projects and theses by students of The Hochschule Niederrhein are also welcome if they fit the subject matter.

In all three cases, contributions or project reports are expected that have been prepared according to scientific standards and invite discussion and further utilisation.

The contributions to the discussion appear irregularly in German or English.

In line with the NIERS mission statement, the target audience is the scientific community, local and regional stakeholders as well as the wider public and students.

Further information

Submission of manuscripts etc

Publication proposals can be submitted by e-mail to the editor Prof Dr Angelika Krehl (angelika.krehl[at]hs-niederrhein.de). After a review by the editor, a scientific review process will take place, in which persons from outside the institute can also be asked for a statement. In this case, the review is carried out as a so-called double-blind peer review.

There are no fixed requirements for the length of the articles, but they should not exceed 35 text pages. An author-date format ("Harvard") is to be used as the citation format, which is adapted to German or English depending on the article language. On request, the citation style can be provided as a Citavi file. Manuscripts accepted for publication must use the format template provided by NIERS.

Good scientific practice

NIERS expects all authors to be familiar with and comply with the "Guidelines for Safeguarding Good Scientific Practice" of the German Research Foundation (DFG).

It can be accessed in German and English at the following link: https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.6472827. All authors must also observe the ethical obligations of COPE (Committee on Publication Ethics). If required, they can be viewed at the following link: https://publicationethics.org/core-practices.

Open Access

All contributions are published exclusively as PDF files under the CC BY 4.0 licence model. They can be read and downloaded free of charge.

This article takes a critical look at structural politics in the course of lignite phase-out in Germany. The authors compile analyses and research experiences from two different regions and interpret them against the background of the current regional policy mechanisms to compensate for the negative consequences in the affected regions. Based on many years of observation of the structural policy processes and related socioeconomic outcomes, different focal points are set. Calculations of innovation potentials are combined with policy and stakeholder participation analysis to sketch a framework for an interdisciplinary perspective of governing lignite phase-out in Germany. The authors conclude that together with the challenge of just transition resulting from the lignite phase-out region-specific transformation requirements are determining variables for regionally effective structural policy. From this, requirements for action can be derived for national funding policy as well as for the institutional settings and mechanisms of its implementation at regional level in the German federal states.

This article explains the procedure for forming a proportionally stratified random sample for an experimental study design with a test and control group to measure the effects of intervention components. The sampling procedure is explained using the health-related pilot project "Regionales Präventionszentrum im Kreis Viersen" (RPV) funded by the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS). The pilot project is part of the "Innovative ways to participate in working life - rehapro" funding programme

Read abstract:

This study analyses the image of the German city of Krefeld and the image of the Dutch city of Venlo. The two cities have not only been twinned since 1964 (Krefeld city council n.d.), but also share a location in the German-Dutch border region. Both cities belong to the euregio rhine-maas-north and are around 40 kilometres apart

Abstact read:

After explaining the problems that prevail in disadvantaged urban neighbourhoods, this article addresses the question of how the local economy in such neighbourhoods can be successfully strengthened. Every city has neighbourhoods with high unemployment and poverty rates, vacancies and a poor image. These economic and social problems are the result of a loss of function in the neighbourhoods, triggered by social and economic structural change. The neighbourhoods enter a downward spiral. In this article, three selected neighbourhoods in Krefeld, Essen and Wuppertal serve as examples of good practice for strengthening the local economy. In the first project, "Nachbarschaft Samtweberei" in Krefeld, the development of a property is closely linked to social neighbourhood work. The "Triple Z" project in Essen shows the successful development of a start-up and business centre. The final example, "Utopiastadt" in Wuppertal, illustrates the successful implementation of the real-world laboratory approach from transformative research. A comparison of the examples at the end of the article shows the parallels between the success factors and the possibility of transferability to other neighbourhoods.
