"Transformation of the local economy"

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

Mönchengladbach city center

Gladbach is a district of the independent city of Mönchengladbach in the Middle Lower Rhine region and covers an area of 164 hectares. The main business center and the old town center with its historical significance are located in Gladbach. The main business center is characterized by its regional appeal and its function as a regional supply center. The main shopping street (Hindenburgstraße) stretches for one kilometer through three statistical districts and is characterized by retail, services and restaurants for short, medium and long-term needs. In the side streets, such as Stephanstrasse, Friedrichstrasse and Wallstrasse, there are many local owner-managed and individual stores that characterize the variety of offers in the main business center.

Historic old town of Viersen-Dülken

The historic old town of Dülken is the economic center of the district of the same name in the town of Viersen on the left bank of the Lower Rhine. It covers an area of around 24 hectares and describes the urban structure of a medieval town with its system of squares and paths, small-scale parcelling and oval layout. As a secondary center for district-related supply, the network of alleys and paths, which is around 5 kilometers long, is characterized by trade, gastronomy, (health) services, markets and events. However, these commercial uses are increasingly being replaced by long-term vacancies or conversion to residential use.

Krefeld South

Krefeld South is part of the district-free city of Krefeld and consists of the two districts of Dießem and Lehmheide. At around 436 hectares, the south of Krefeld is by far the largest study area of the project. Residential areas present themselves here in various forms. There are also some significant large structures, including the Heeder factory, which has been converted into an event and administration venue, the main municipal cemetery, the Heliosklinikum hospital, the Maria-Hilf hospital, the Evonik company site, The Hochschule Niederrhein and two larger allotment garden associations. A large part of the local economy extends along the two local supply areas Kölner Strasse and Gladbacher Strasse.

The competence network "Local Economy on the Lower Rhine" is aimed at all players in the local economy who are interested in exchanging knowledge and experience on topics relating to the local economy on the Middle Lower Rhine. The network offers a platform for discussion between entrepreneurs, citizens, politicians, administration, chambers and associations on various topics. In particular, stakeholders from the cities of Krefeld and Mönchengladbach as well as the district of Viersen are addressed, but all interested parties are also welcome to participate. In the competence network, suggestions, experiences, strategies and recommendations for action to strengthen the local economy are to be discussed and passed on in cooperation with the participants. The aim is to strengthen the potential of the local economy through overarching cooperation in the region.

The network meetings are currently taking place online due to the COVID-19 pandemic. In the future, a meeting with different specializations will take place approximately every 3-4 months. If you would like information about the next meeting, would like to give re-registration or suggest a new topic, please contact transloek(at)hs-niederrhein.de.
