Melting Pot University

Jan Schuch, who studied in the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology from 2013 to 2018, sees the "melting pot" of people who come together at the university as an important and formative experience.

Of course, the first thing you think of is your fellow students, with whom you studied the same subject and with whom you can get excited about a common topic. But you also have to include the academic personnel, the lecturers, who can certainly make your life a little more difficult sometimes with less exciting topics and unpleasant examinations, but who can basically be just as passionate about a subject and pass this enthusiasm on to the students. The fact that "everyone" virtually merges into a single unit for a cause is something that Jan Schuch had not known until then. This positive experience certainly contributes to the fact that - if he had the choice - he would do everything the same way again. The Degree programme would again be Clothing Technology with a specialisation in Management. "Fashion is still my passion. Even though I no longer work in the textile and apparel industry," he sums up. Incidentally, he has moved from the apparel world to the digital world. At valantic, one of the fastest growing digital solutions, consulting and software companies on the market, he is now Content & Digital Marketing Manager in the CX (Customer Experience) Competence Center. His path from fashion to digital was paved by his experiences at the Hochschule Niederrhein. He wrote his Bachelor's thesis on luxury brands in the transition to digitalization, using Gucci and Prada as examples. He can still remember the transition from student to graduate. Today, he describes the moment shortly after he received the results for his Bachelor's thesis and the oral examination, when he left the room and finally stood as a graduate in front of the faculty building in Mönchengladbach as surreal. "You've been working towards this moment for so long and then all of a sudden it's over quite abruptly" he recalls wistfully. He also feels a little melancholy when he thinks about how often he was the academic 15 minutes late for the lecture. Just typical student.
