Thomas Huschbeck | HSNR 1993

From soccer to marketing professional

Thomas Huschbeck certainly didn't have the typical student life when he began his studies in business administration in 1993. After playing for Borussia Mönchengladbach and Fortuna Düsseldorf as a professional soccer player, he financed his studies as a player for the third division club Germania Teveren.

Thanks to convenient training times in the evenings, he was able to continue playing soccer and study at the same time. For Thomas Huschbeck, this was "the perfect combination of intellectual work and sporting activity. He even met some of his friends and ex-football colleagues again during his studies, and together they sometimes passed the time in lectures by creatively naming their fellow students. Together, they also celebrated the silent speaking along of the script, which each student had obtained, because the professor at the time adhered to it and always made the same jokes at exactly the same places.

Much more interesting for him was the subject of marketing and here especially service marketing. Prof. Dr. Bieberstein was a great inspiration for him here, who also supervised him during the practice-related diploma thesis and inspired him for the topic. And as chance would have it, years earlier Prof. Bieberstein had worked in the same department at Henkel as Thomas Huschbeck when he started there. Today, he is responsible for market research processes in the Western Europe region at Henkel, with a team in Düsseldorf and one in Bratislava. You don't need a degree from an elite university to have a fulfilling career, he sums up. What is important is how you present yourself on the job and what you achieve. Practical relevance, which is part of the apprenticeship in addition to the theoretical models at universities of applied sciences, plays an important role and for many companies this is an important aspect in their employee selection. For Thomas Huschbeck, business administration was the right choice and he would study it again today, because the result is that you are universally positioned and gain a good overview of how a company functions as a whole. In the meantime, however, digitalization must be an integral part of the curriculum and the syllabi must be set up accordingly.

The time at the Hochschule Niederrhein has therefore equipped him well for working life and - what he is particularly pleased about - he has also developed friendships that have lasted to this day.
