Equal Pay Day 2025

Equal Pay Day reminds us that women in Germany received an average of 18% less pay than men in 2023. This means that up until today, March 6, they have been working for free. Fortunately, this gap fell to 16% in 2024. This is a small step towards equal pay. In 2026, Equal Pay Day will therefore take place on February 27.

Even if you adjust the pay gap and only include jobs of equal value, there is still a difference of six percent. This is despite the fact that an administrative court recently confirmed that pay should not depend on the negotiating skills of employees.[1] This assumption also implies that women have poorer skills in salary negotiations.

The causes of the gender pay gap are complex. One key factor is the system in which care work, i.e. unpaid care work, is mainly performed by women. In addition, pay levels in female-dominated sectors, such as care or retail, are often lower than in traditionally male-dominated sectors.

But at least you can take the money you already have into your own hands: An important step towards financial equality is financial education. This includes dealing with topics such as investing money, retirement planning and asset accumulation.

We would like to draw your attention to a gender equality event that will help you to shape your own financial future:

Finances at a glance - investing money between secure and opportunity-oriented

Wednesday, 09.04.2025 19:00 - 21:00 h

Investing money doesn't have to be complicated! In this presentation, you will find out which forms of investment are worthwhile and how they can be combined with each other. Where can you find good interest rates and what are ETFs? Can comparison portals help with the search and what should you look out for? The event is designed to help you get your investment on the right track and only take the risk you are prepared to bear.

Speaker: Barbara Rück, expert for retirement provision, construction financing and investment, Verbraucherzentrale NRW e.V.
