Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

FSJ Culture as a guest at the Faculty

On 21 and 22 May 2020, eleven FSJ Culture volunteers attended their first Education Days at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences to get to know the Bachelor's degree programme in Cultural Education.

The education days kicked off on Tuesday evening with a relaxed start at JuLook. Vivianne Schnitzler and Professor Frank Jebe introduced the volunteers to the Cultural Education degree programme, the professional fields for cultural educators and the cultural scene in Mönchengladbach before the "Cooking & Foosball" event. On Wednesday, the volunteers were able to gain their own experience in the Degree programme's indoor seminar. In addition to artistic experimentation, there was plenty of time for questions and dialogue with the students.

The educational days were organised by Prof. Dr Felicitas Lowinski and Prof. Dr Frank Jebe as well as the second semester students of the Cultural Education degree programme in cooperation with LAG Arbeit Bildung Kultur NRW e.V..

Theory & practice

The Cultural Education degree programme is characterised by a close link between theory and practice. The aim is to develop a self-reflective and professional attitude to the demands of the professional field. The content of the studies includes aesthetic project assignments, the examination of scientific theories and empirical research as well as the acquisition of legal, financial and organisational knowledge and skills. You will gain an advanced course in the development of cultural education as a sub-discipline of educational science, deal with philosophical, political and cultural science theories and familiarise yourself with educational and cultural policy concepts. • Media design & digitality

  • Pedagogical fields of action & projects
  • Educational, political and social sciences

  • Post-migration & post-colonialism

With all senses

The specialisation in cultural education studies focuses on the development of the human senses. The studies make a decisive contribution to your own ability to perceive and create. You will experience differentiated forms of hearing, seeing or movement through music, literature, dance, film, photography, visual arts or theatre.

Cultural projects during studies

By independently planning and implementing a cultural project, you will gain valuable knowledge and skills to successfully position yourself in the cultural and educational labour market. Together with your fellow students, you will develop, design and reflect on a topic relevant to cultural education, dovetailing theory and practice. In addition to gaining experience in conceptual, organisational and public relations work, you will develop presentation skills, experience the joy of a joint presentation and gain insights into the regional and local cultural scene. In recent years, a number of impressive performances and exhibitions have been organised as part of the studies.

Cultural participation is important to us

Prof. Dr Felicitas Lowinski / "Cultural education opens up people's own access to the world. Our graduates stand for a professionalisation of cultural education work that is diverse, critical, barrier-free and sustainable."

Practical experience, excursions and discourses

The Cultural Education degree programme attaches particular importance to the connection to practice and the close exchange between teaching education and experts from the relevant professional fields of cultural education. For this reason, numerous excursions and meetings with cooperation partners take place. With the forums "Politics-Culture-Education" and►"Postmigrant perspectives" the faculties enable students to engage in lively dialogue and provide vivid insights into current debates and social discourse.

Lateral entry as a pedagogical specialist

With the Bachelor's degree programme in Cultural Education, you will acquire a level of expertise that will qualify you as far as possible for work in daycare centres and (all-day) schools. This is of interest as there is a high demand for high-quality cultural programmes in this field of work. Please note that recognition as a pedagogical specialist is a case-by-case decision and depends on the respective institution. Individual certificates of pedagogical or artistic qualification may also need to be obtained. As a rule, 6 months of professional experience in a daycare centre or all-day care facility must be demonstrated before recognition as a pedagogical specialist is granted.

If you are interested in being recognised as a specialist, we will support you in your project. Please contact the Degree Programme Coordinator by email.

If you have any questions about the Degree programme (BA KP and MA KP&KM), please contact Prof. Dr. Frank Jebe.
