Since its foundation in 2010, the institute, which is part of the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences, has been responsible for planning, acquiring, implementing and evaluating research, development and scientific consultancy projects in the faculties of labour, health, social affairs and skills development management.
The institute both initiates and implements projects in cooperation with third parties. Third parties are important partners for the institute in the realisation of research, development and scientific consulting projects, as the institute takes up practice-related issues and cooperatively seeks and develops solutions to problems in the combination of research and practice.
This approach gave rise to the surname SO.CON (Social Concepts - Institute for Research and Development in Social Work and Education): The institute develops innovative concepts for social work and the social economy on the basis of scientific studies. As social work is generally closely linked to problems in the areas of labour and psychosocial health, these topics are central to the work on innovative concepts for social work.
All projects are closely linked to teaching education in the degree programmes of the faculties involved.
In particular, the institute strives to promote theses in the Master's and doctoral programmes (in cooperation with RWTH Aachen University, WWU Münster, University of Duisburg-Essen).
