All relevant information is available at the following locations:

  • The official Examinations Board schedule document , available in the Moodle course. This document summarises all bindingdates in detail.
  • The annual calendar in the semester view, which shows the dates at a glance.
  • A calendaryou can subscribe to, which you can integrate once into your digital calendar programme on your laptop or smartphone.

To the right of this text you will find all documents as links for easy downloading. This allows you to keep track of the dates relevant to your studies at all times.

Seminar selection

Registration for courses takes place via the HIO system. The choice of seminar is independent of the subsequent examination registration, which is a legally binding process. For courses with a limited number of participants, such as seminars with several parallel groups, students must prioritise their preferred seminars as much as possible. In the event of overbooking, the system decides by means of an automated lottery procedure to ensure equal opportunities. In courses without a limit on the number of participants, enrolments are made independently and without prioritisation in order to ensure considerable planning security for all participants. Students should only choose courses that are scheduled in the degree programme pathway and may not bring forward modules for which they are not yet scheduled.

Current time periods for choosing courses can be found in the schedule. A detailed step-by-step guide to choosing a seminar can be found in the PDF.

You can find further information and information deviating from this on the seminar selection page.

The Examinations Board at the faculty monitors examinations, decides on applications, ensures compliance with the examination regulations and ensures fair procedures in studies and performance assessments. All important information and contacts can be found on the Examinations Board website.

BA Social Work (Dual)

Dual degree programme Bachelor Social Work and Education

Special features
Intensive and continuous insight into at least one selected field of social work and remuneration for practical application.

  • From the outset, students work for a selected social work provider for approximately 20 hours and attend the university two to three days a week to attend courses on the Bachelor of Social Work and Education degree programme. The number of days at the university depends on the requirements of the respective semester.
  • Students on the dual degree programme must successfully complete all modules that are also required for the undergraduate Bachelor of Social Work and Education (B.A.) degree programme and therefore graduate with a Bachelor of Arts (B.A.).
  • The practical application at the respective institution is financially remunerated. The remuneration is linked to the expectation of the provider that the students in the dual degree programme will be available as employees for a limited and contractually defined period after successfully completing their studies.

Commitment, professionalism,
Social skills
The aim of the studies is to enable students to provide committed, professional support and encouragement to people of all ages and to care for and support people in difficult life situations, social crises and conflicts. After successfully completing the degree programme, students are prepared to work independently and competently in the field of social assistance.

Longer degree programme
The only difference between the dual degree programme in Social Work and the undergraduate degree programme is the length of the planned study period - 8 semesters instead of 6. Dual students take part in the same courses as students on the undergraduate degree programme (same content, weekdays and times) - only spread over 8 semesters instead of 6. Beyond that, there are only very minor differences - an additional field-specific transfer module to dovetail practice and university must be attended and the classic practical phase is omitted.

BA Cultural Education

Self-designed living environments
The pedagogical skills taught in the studies aim to develop the creative powers and cultural potential of people individually and in groups. In this way, self-determined aesthetic designs for a meaningful life are to be discovered and sponsored. Our educational concept is particularly orientated towards the paradigm of empowerment, which focuses on the development of people's own strengths and resources in their living environments.

Knowledge and skills for accompanying and advising parents and families as well as for carrying out conceptual, organisational and management tasks are acquired.

Childhood in motion

Applied psychology

From the winter semester 2024/25, the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and the Faculty of Health Care will jointly offer the new Bachelor's degree programme in Applied Psychology.

Practice- and future-oriented with excellent prospects - this is how the new degree programme at The Hochschule Niederrhein presents itself. It combines the high scientific and research orientation of the subject of psychology with a strong focus on application, so that the Bachelor's degree qualifies students directly for practical application on the one hand and provides a good foundation course for a more advanced Master's programme on the other.

MA Cultural Education & Cultural Management

Unique combination
The Master's degree programme "Cultural Education and Cultural Management" is unique in its kind in the Federal Republic of Germany. Like no other, it combines the two pillars of education and management in the field of culture at a high academic level.

Cultural education
// Shaping the living environment and participation in culture
Cultural education is a cross-sectional discipline from educational science, cultural and media studies and the pedagogy of visual and performing arts. Based on aesthetic experiences with the means of the arts, it supports its addressees both in shaping their living environment and in participating in cultural and social processes.
Cultural education is based on an expanded concept of culture that includes everyday cultures and the fine arts in equal measure and can be used for innovative cultural mediation work in educational and cultural institutions as well as in public spaces.

Cultural management
// Organisational and management activities
Cultural management opens up scope for action for culture and secures its factual and financial framework conditions - be it in the planning, organisation and financing of events or in the context of organisational and management activities in municipalities, supra-regional institutions and private cultural institutions.
// Legal foundations
Basic legal knowledge and application skills are highly relevant for project implementation and event organisation and especially for the management of a cultural institution. Constitutional framework conditions, foundation courses in contract and copyright law as well as event law, labour and company law are taught and their application in practical application is practised.

Commencement of studies
The MA Cultural Education and Cultural Management programme generally begins with two compulsory introductory weeks, during which important study-related content is taught right at the commencement of studies. Experience has shown that the Master's year groups are very heterogeneous, i.e. the students usually come from a wide variety of cultural, media and/or educational backgrounds. A multi-faceted introductory programme has proven its worth for a good start to the Master's. Please plan your attendance at the university according to the following overview. The regular, weekly courses take place from Mondays to Wednesdays and begin after the two introductory weeks. The course catalogue is usually available online from July.

General information

What is a specialised tutorial?

Subject tutorials are held to support courses. You will be supported by experienced students (tutors) in reviewing the subject content and preparing for exams. You also have the opportunity to clarify questions, find learning partners and familiarise yourself with new learning techniques.

A specialised tutorial is not a substitute for attending the course, but provides additional support.

Tutoring programme

In order to avoid "jumping in at the deep end" when starting out as a tutor, tutors are prepared methodically and didactically for their work in the university-wide tutor programme. This qualification also offers the opportunity to acquire the certificate for tutors.

For all those who are already working as a tutor for the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences or have just started, it is worth taking a look at the university's tutor programme.
Here you will find various training courses, coaching and exchange formats as well as all information on the certificates you can obtain as a tutor.
