Welcome to the GLI

About Us

The Joint Computer Science Laboratory (GLI) offers many courses in the Computer Science degree programmes of the Faculties of Engineering and Computer Science.

In particular, the GLI bundles software-orientated courses that are held in shared computer rooms. These include topics such as software development in various programming languages, working with different system architectures, parallel computing, database systems, encryption technologies and graphical data processing - a small selection of the courses on offer.

Further details on the individual courses can be found under the headings "People" and "Events".

In addition, contact information is available on the official websites of Faculty 03, which may not be available here.

Premises and Equipment

The joint computer science laboratory has several event rooms (B308, B312, B315, B322, F204, F207), each equipped with 16 to 32 workstations. For theses, we also provide room B306 with ten workstations, ideal for Master's and Bachelor's theses.

Up to 20 notebooks and 8 tablets can also be made available on request.

IT support

We are happy to support you with minor computer problems by providing advice and assistance. Please understand that we cannot take care of procurements or administrative tasks. In these areas we have to limit ourselves to the GLI and ask you to contact your own employees.

If you have any questions about your e-mail, WLAN or VPN access, please contact the responsible university IT (KIS).

Laboratory Computer Setup

The GLI prepares the computers for the coming semester. Teaching educators must submit a list of the required software to the GLI staff in good time (usually during the lecture-free period).

Once the "master image" has been completed, the GLI offers the opportunity to test the functionality of the software and make any necessary adjustments.

Note: Changes after the deadline for reporting software requirements can only be considered with difficulty. Therefore, please note the deadlines for submitting the software list and the opportunity for testing.

Virtual Machines

For teaching in the laboratories, the GLI offers the option of hosting a virtual machine (VM) on one of the servers. The GLI takes over the initial setup of the VM. Subsequently, the respective university teacher / lecturer is responsible for the functionality of the VM in accordance with the user regulations of The Hochschule Niederrhein.

Note: The GLI reserves the right to switch off the VM as a precautionary measure to prevent damage caused by misconfiguration or malfunctions.

Note: For compulsory optional courses, it is possible to install virtual machines with VirtualBox on the client computers. For this we need a pre-built VM from the respective lecturer.

Note: Virtual machines are only accessible within the lab networks.

Theses

In addition to the topics for theses that you can find from the GLI's university teachers / lecturers, GLI staff also offer their own topics.

You can obtain a list of these topics on request or in a personal discussion.

Research and Development

The GLI's university teachers / lecturers are mainly active in research and development at the iPattern and IMH institutes. Information on their fields of work and core research areas can be found on the respective institute websites.

Our employees are also involved in various R&D projects.

Legal notice on the use of the laboratory

The Hochschule Niederrhein's IT user regulations apply in the computer science laboratories (GLI). These are a prerequisite for using the IT infrastructure in the labs.

Coding@HSNR

The GLI has been active in student recruitment since 2018 with Coding@HSNR and invites pupils to develop computer science projects during the Easter and autumn holidays and gain their first insights into the world of studying at the faculty.

Further information and registration can be found here.

Further offers for SuS

The GLI offers courses for school classes interested in computer science. The courses usually last 2 × 4 hours, but can be booked flexibly.

If you have any questions, please contact Mr Hloch or the FB03 Administration.
