Requirements for the studies

1. is there a certain number of ECTS that must already be available at the time of application?

No minimum number of ECTS is required at the time of application. However, the full 180 ECTS must be available at the time of registration by 30 September at the latest.

 

2. do I need certain prior knowledge to be able to start the Master's programme in Energy Management Engineering?

To start the Master's degree programme in Energy Management Engineering, you need basic knowledge of energy technology and energy management. Otherwise, it is recommended that you already have some knowledge of business administration and energy policy.

 

3. can I also apply if I have not achieved a final grade of at least 2.5?

If you have not achieved the minimum grade in your Bachelor's degree, you can still apply for the Energy Management Engineering degree programme. In this case, your application will be evaluated individually by the programme director and particularly qualified achievements such as an outstanding thesis or a particularly successful second half of the curriculum of your first degree and relevant professional experience will be assessed.

 

4. can I have credits from my Bachelor's degree recognised?

In principle, it is possible to have credits from your Bachelor's degree recognised, provided this is approved by the Examinations Board. To do this, you must first submit an application to the Examinations Office. You can download the application form in Moodle as soon as you are registered as a student.

Dates and deadlines

1. what deadlines do I have to meet for application and registration?

You must submit your application to us by 15 September and register with us by 30 September at the latest in order to be able to begin your studies in the coming winter semester. You can find an overview of the deadlines you need to meet here.

 

2 When does the Master's programme in Energy Management Engineering start at The Hochschule Niederrhein?

The Master's degree programme in Energy Management Engineering can be started every year in the winter semester. Registration must be completed by 30 September. As a rule, the winter semester begins with an introductory week in mid-September.

 

3 How does examination registration and deregistration work?

Students must register for examinations, assignments and course attendance certificates in the student portal by a certain deadline. It is important to adhere to the deadline, as it is not possible to register later and therefore not be able to take the examination. Cancellation of an examination must be made no later than one week before the examination date. If this is not done, the non-attendance will be counted as a failed attempt.

 

4. do the courses also take place at weekends?

Some block courses, which are held by external contract lecturers, take place on Saturdays.

1. how can I imagine the course in the Master's programme in Energy Management Engineering?

The courses are generally very interactive. Students are therefore expected to show initiative and prepare for the course content. The ability to work in a team is also a prerequisite, as many tasks are worked on together in groups and then presented. The development and presentation of content-related topics is part of some courses. There is also a laboratory where experiments can be carried out using the equipment from the lecture. It can therefore be said that there are no "classic lectures".

 

2. at which campus do the courses of the Master's programme in Energy Management Engineering take place?

The courses mainly take place at Krefeld South Campus.

 

3. in which language do the lectures take place?

Most of the lectures are held in German, but the literature is often in English. The master's thesis can be written in either English or German. Therefore, knowledge of both languages is helpful in order to successfully complete the studies.

 

4. are all courses offered every semester?

The lectures are offered in the designated semester and therefore only take place once a year.

Theses

1. can I write my master's thesis in cooperation with a company?

The master's thesis can be written on a practical issue in an external company or internally based on research.

 

2. can my master's thesis be published? What funding opportunities are available for master's theses?

Theses by students with outstanding performance have already been published in the past and have also been honoured with prizes. Our university teachers / lecturers will always endeavour to support you during this time, for example by accompanying you to international conferences.

 

3. is it possible to do a doctorate after the Master's programme?

It is important to the faculty to continue to support successful research projects and to enable the best graduates to pursue a doctorate. Some graduates are currently doing their doctorate at SWK E².

 

Alongside your studies

1. how are the exams organised? Do I have enough time to complete an internship during the semester break?

The examinations take place in a block before the start of the semester break. As a rule, the examinations for the winter semester take place in the first weeks of February and those for the summer semester usually in the middle/end of July. The examination phases are usually followed by an 8-10 week lecture-free period during which internships can be completed.

 

2. is there enough time during my studies to pursue a part-time job or work as a student trainee?

The Master's in Energy Management Engineering is a full-time degree programme and lecture-free days during the week are therefore not necessarily included in the timetable. Nevertheless, the head of the degree programme endeavours to keep the timetable compact and this usually results in two days off per week. Many of the students use these days to pursue a part-time job.

 

3. does the university offer me the opportunity to make contact with companies?

Most of the projects during the curriculum are carried out in cooperation with companies, so that important contacts with potential employers can already be made during the studies.

 

4. does The Hochschule Niederrhein offer financial support programmes?

Every year, the university awards a number of Germany Scholarships in cooperation with companies, which applicants and students can apply for. Otherwise, there is still the possibility of being sponsored by BaFög. You can find more information on funding opportunities here.

 

5 I have a child. Does the University of Applied Sciences Niederrhein offer childcare options?

6. does the university offer sports courses alongside my studies?
University life is very colourful. You have the opportunity to choose from a wide range of courses. These include sports courses, dance courses and the university choir. You can find an overview of the courses on offer at the Krefeld campus here.

 

7. can I learn new languages outside of the Degree programme?

The university has a Language Centre on both campuses. This centre offers language courses during the lecture period and during the lecture-free period. You can find more information and an overview of the language courses on offer here.
