Faculty of Industrial Engineering opens new IoT lab

Last Thursday, the new IoT lab at the Faculty of Industrial Engineering was ceremoniously opened. IoT stands for "Internet of Things" and describes technologies that are used within a global infrastructure to network virtual and physical machines and devices.

Prof. Dr. Alexander Korth had the idea for this when he was appointed Professor of Date Science in March 2020. Now, just over two years later, students can use the lab for research purposes. The two rooms of the IoT lab are modeled on a kitchen and a living room. With everything that goes with it - TV, refrigerator, microwave. Robot vacuum cleaner, smart speakers and lighting. Well hidden are over 100 sensors that collect data on all devices - in compliance with data protection laws, of course. This data is collected across the board on a platform and can be analyzed by the students.

In the process, students from various disciplines can find research topics in the IoT lab. Both aspects of sustainability (energy consumption of the devices) and questions of compatibility (six different IoT ecosystems are installed in the lab) can be examined in greater detail here. One thing is certain, however, for the university's students the new lab is a real upgrade.
