Sustainable Denim Collection 'Indigenous Modernity' successful at Tunis Fashion Week 2022

The sustainable denim capsule collection "Indigenous Modernity" was created as part of the exchange program led by student Oussema Haddar between The Hochschule Niederrhein, represented by designers Charlotte Weber and Ramona Möllers, and Tunisian denim supplier Sartex Group.

After strategic history and culture lessons, visiting local markets and gaining insight into Tunisian contemporary culture with locals, the two design engineering students Möllers and Weber were inspired by the patterns of Berber tattoos, with each Berber symbol having a specific meaning that explains certain feelings/emotions. After intensive exchange and discussion with Oussema and Tunisian historians, the boundaries were set and the design students Möllers and Weber transferred the symbols/tattoos into eleven unique and different outfits.

Sustainability in particular plays an important role in the collection and stands for modernity. Innovative production processes were used by the Sartex Group to reduce water consumption with regard to SDG 6 through water treatment processes, ozone washing and working with laser techniques. The 3D program CLO 3D was used to visualize the collection ideas. Mono materials were used for the materials and wood qualities for the accessories, so that the garments are recyclable at the end of their life cycle in terms of circular economy.
