HSNR professors distinguished for special courses

275 people teach at The Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR). Two of them have now been awarded the prize for outstanding achievements in teaching education: Prof. Dr. Franziska Hilp-Pompey from the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences and Prof. Lisa Freyschmidt from the Faculty of Design.

Students and the faculty nominated 31 individuals and teams for the annual teaching award, 20 of whom submitted applications. The jury consisted of five professors and five students from different faculties. Prof. Dr. Berthold Stegemerten, Vice President for Studies and Teaching Education, presented the winners with prize money of 2500 euros each for the further development of their teaching concepts at the Senate Award ceremony.

Prof. Dr. Franziska Hilp-Pompey received the award for her lecture "Social Law" - a large-scale practical orientation course for around 200 students in the third semester of the Bachelor's degree program in Social Work. It simulates a counseling situation with a fictitious client. The combination of classroom lectures and guided self-learning phase as group work with a sophisticated course on the online learning platform convinced the jury. Prof. Dr. Hilp-Pompey also uses multimedia methods such as podcast interviews. The students nominated the professor of social and migration law not least because of her structured lecture design. "I would like to use the prize money of 2500 euros to create a learning app and offer a follow-up workshop for the students," says Prof. Dr. Hilp-Pompey.

Winner Lisa Freyschmidtreceived the teaching prize for her innovative "HyperLokal" project. The professor of ceramic, porcelain and glass design has only been at the HSNR for one year. In her course, 19 design students from the 3rd semester dealt with changes in table culture and set up a regional pop-up restaurant in Krefeld's Stadtgarten - from the counter and height-adjustable furniture to the self-designed porcelain. The "Advanced Organizor" helped students to keep track of the entire course at all times with the help of a digital white board. The students emphasized the strong practical and real-world relevance of the "HyperLokal". Prof. Freyschmidt: "I will use the prize money to continue initiating projects that go one step further and don't stop at the drafts."

Two applications also made it onto the shortlist. The choice fell on Prof. Dr.-Ing. habil. Heyko-Jürgen Schultz from the Faculty of Chemistry for his course "Safety Engineering" on the Bachelor's degree programme in Chemistry. He succeeded in making the topic exciting in a practical orientation through classroom and digital teaching and the jointly opened Instagram account.

Prof. Dr. Katrin Nihalani from the Faculty of Health Carewas also honored for her course "Business Mathematics" in the Health Care Management, Therapy Science and Medical Informatics degree programs in the first semester. Students nominated her for her excellently prepared learning videos and the continuous and well-structured review of the learning objectives achieved.
