Ring event: Social aspects of artificial intelligence

2nd event: "Artificial Intelligence on the Road - The Case for Autonomous Vehicles".

It already sounds very tempting: Just get into the car, enter the destination and the car does the rest on its own - we can use the driving time for other things!

Autonomous vehicles are always being talked about as the mobility of the future and still sound a bit like science fiction. But what is the current situation with autonomous vehicles? What does artificial intelligence have to do with it? And what advantages and challenges could autonomous vehicles bring?

We want to take a closer look at these questions during the lecture and highlight the social implications of artificial intelligence on the road using the example of legal and ethical aspects.

Plastic fibers wash microplastics into the sea, while cotton requires vast amounts of water and is grown in monocultures. Established manufacturers and startups are currently experimenting with a variety of materials to make textile production more sustainable. Leon Blanckart from The Hochschule Niederrhein is one of these innovation drivers.

In his "Algatex" project, funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research, he is investigating the extent to which special freshwater algae species can be used as a renewable raw material for the textile fibers of the future. The approaches are very promising - as things stand today, it can generally be assumed that the cultivation of aquatic plant fibers will represent a quantum leap in the world of textile raw materials. At the next Meetup on Wednesday, October 18, 6:30 p.m., at Café Van Dooren, Kaiserstraße 132, Leon will present the current status of his project, who is supporting him, what challenges he faces, and what he still needs to make his project a success.

The Meetups are organized by the digitalization and start-up association nextMG in cooperation with the WFMG. On Monday, Oct. 30, 2023 , the LAKUM Mönchengladbach will be transformed into a puzzle room. The religious and cultural scientist Daniel Huthmacher, who already equipped the puzzle room for the Shrine Tour at the Abteiberg with all his cool equipment, will take us back to biblical times and challenge our gray cells.

Bible knowledge or other religious education is not required, just creativity and teamwork!

Note for claustrophobics: No one will be locked in and it won't be dark. Just exciting!

Language is like a sharp knife. It can be a useful tool, or a powerful weapon. Through language we communicate with each other and describe our view of the world. Not least because it is such an identity-forming component of our coexistence, efforts to change language and make it more gender-sensitive have been the subject of controversial discussions for some time. Is this really what is needed, a more gender-inclusive language? What changes if we use an asterisk or a colon? What benefits can this have; and how do I implement it concretely?

The workshop on 10/26-23, 3-6:30 p.m. will provide participants with an in-depth overview of gender-inclusive ways of speaking and writing. In order to include all types of learners and possibly also critical listeners, the format consists of different contents: Data of current empirical research and study results are complemented by thought experiments and examples that make the positive effects of inclusive language tangible. In the second part, the background and meaning of different spellings, as well as the necessary basic knowledge to integrate gender-inclusive language elegantly and pragmatically into everyday life will be conveyed.

The speaker Muriel Aichberger is a social, art and media scientist with a specialisation in equality, diversity and inclusion.
