From May 22 - 24, 2024, the MittelstandsMAKERTHON.NRW will take place in the AI Village at the euronovaCAMPUS in Hürth with a focus on "Artificial Intelligence".

We are looking for students from all disciplines who are interested in the topic of AI and would like to develop solutions for challenges faced by companies in the region in an interdisciplinary team under the guidance of professional innovation coaches. The best result will be awarded a prize by the Ministry of Economic Affairs, Industry, Climate Protection and Energy of North Rhine-Westphalia at the end of the 2.5-day Makerthon. Furthermore, the solutions developed will be followed up and integrated into the day-to-day operations of the participating companies.

In Germany, around a third of all food ends up in the garbage can every day, even though it could still be eaten. This is not only a waste of the food itself, but also of the resources that have gone into growing, harvesting, packaging, transporting and storing it. In Mönchengladbach, a foodsharing group has been working to "rescue food" since 2015. Foodsharing campaigns against food waste in various ways, for example via the online platform foodsharing.de.
This presentation provides information about the food sharing movement regionally and nationally.

With some distance from everyday life and the opportunity to recharge your batteries spiritually, you will hopefully find it easier to concentrate. Werner Heymann survived the concentration camp in Auschwitz, among other things. What helped him survive: The man from Krefeld, who was Jewish, had a great talent for playing the accordion, which he used to entertain his tormentors. An exhibition with illustrations is now being held in his honor: On Tuesday, January 30, at 6:30 pm at the Villa Merländer (Friedrich-Ebert-Straße 42) in Krefeld. From then on, the impressive works by students from the Faculty of Design will be on display until February 6 (Monday to Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.).

Three budding communication designers have taken an artistic approach to Heymann's biography, which was published as a book by the NS Documentation Center in 2008. Their aim: to sensitize the younger generation to the topic. In his biography entitled "Mein himmelblaues Akkordeon - Erinnerungen eines Krefelder Auschwitz-Überlebenden", Heymann describes his life before, during and after the Nazi dictatorship.

21 budding business IT specialists took a close look at Stadtwerke Krefeld's mobility app - and examined the usability of the application for different target groups. What is particularly successful, where is there room for improvement? The five teams also implemented their own ideas: They produced an app prototype based on their ideal concept. They presented their results to employees of SWK-IT, who are responsible for developing the app.

The conclusion: overall, the teams rated the app as very user-friendly, easy to understand and stable. The groups also agreed that the app makes a very good visual impression. To increase accessibility, the teams recommended that the font size should be variable in future and that the contrast ratios should be increased in individual cases so that people with visual impairments can read content even better. A suggestion that SWK was happy to take on board. They also suggested sorting the different ticket options.

On February 9 and 10, 2024, graduates and students will exhibit their semester and final theses. The communication and product design show will be accompanied by an exciting supporting program with workshops, lectures, portfolio advisory services as well as campus and exhibition tours.
