The Biene40 project is nearing its degree at the end of February. In an online workshop at the beginning of the month, the team led by Prof. Dr. Claus Brell presented the project results, in particular simple new sensor technology that you can build yourself. Four guest speakers from very different disciplines and many guests were also involved.
A training concept and a rental version for the networked sensors will also be available in the course of the year. This will make it very easy and low-threshold for new beekeepers in particular to get started in beekeeping. Dr. Jonathan Bank (networking initiative "Beenovation") emphasized the importance of Biene40 in the context of the 16 projects funded by the Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture, as Biene40 in particular has produced quickly applicable and practicable solutions.
In the context of the digitalization of beekeeping, the four invited guest speakers highlighted digital ways to varroa resistance, experiences with the Beelogger honey scale and AI models for determining the condition of bee colonies as well as the general use of AI and AI chatbots in agriculture.
In summary, Prof. Brell concludes that "technology must follow the needs of beekeepers. We have succeeded in doing this quite well in Biene40. This also paves the way for more minimally invasive beekeeping. The use of systems such as ChatGPT opens up possibilities that were not even thought of two years ago. Further research is needed here that considers agriculture, animal husbandry and beekeeping in context."
