We are pleased to announce the renewed nominations of sustainably developed textile material designs for the Materialica Award 2023:

The dilemma of returned textiles
A revolutionary approach to greener, closed-loop material design in the automotive industry at the Materialica Award 2023

A cooperation between Hochschule Niederrhein & Fynch Hatton
5th semester project 2022/23
supervised by Prof. Dr. Marina-Elena Wachs

Charlotte Weber(Design Engineering fashion) andRamona Möllers(Design Engineering fashion)

The project developed in the 5th semester in cooperation of The Hochschule Niederrhein and Fynch Hatton Textil- Handelsgesellschaft mbH, initiated by Ramona Möllers and Charlotte Weber supervised by Prof. Dr. Marina-Elena Wachs, serves as an example of the implementation of a more sustainable, closed textile value chain.

The combination of a unified sustainable design of the backpack and the interior design of the car brings comfort and style, in line with the UN Sustainable Development Goals 12,13 & 17 to a new level.

The textiles"Re3kinned" and"ReVived" are recycled from returned garments from the fashion company Fynch Hatton. The textile"ReVived", which can be used for car seat surfaces, is made from a yarn provided by TURNS from old clothes (70%) & PET bottles (30%). The textile"Re3kinned" was woven from returned polo shirts in collaboration with the Prodia workshop for people with disabilities to create a new textile surface that can be used for car carpets and headrests.
