Bruno Bak | HSNR 2010 - 2016

Not a typical student

When Bruno Bak started his studies in electrical engineering in 2010, he had to put up with some questioning and irritated looks. And some of the students were certainly wondering how long he had been studying or whether he was the new professor.

After all, taking up studies in his early 50s is certainly not an everyday occurrence. But after 35 years of successful work in the electrical industry in the area of apprenticeship for junior staff, Bruno Bak was looking for another challenge and began to study alongside his regular job. Since part-time studies or distance learning were not possible, he attended only the most necessary courses and had to teach himself many lectures, since his normal 40-hour work week left him little room for maneuver. At the latest in the higher semesters and due to the jointly completed examination preparations and examinations, the questioning looks of fellow students now had another reason. With 35 years of professional experience, Bruno Bak was able to answer a number of questions based on practical applications and even surprise one or the other professor with examples of practical applications.

He himself benefited most from the exam preparations in a small circle and describes this as a nice memory and good help for the studies. That it was exactly the right subject for him is demonstrated by the fact that he would choose to do it again immediately if he had the choice. Bruno Bak stayed with the university after his studies and took over the management of the newly created MakerSpace. There, students and pupils have the opportunity to try out machines and materials and carry out projects away from the usual lessons. In the high-tech workshop, practical application of what has been learned takes place, but students can also implement their own ideas. A dream job for Bruno Bak, who hopes that in the future students from all Degree programmes will take advantage of the opportunities offered by the MakerSpace in Krefeld.
