Managing care facilities professionally
with the help of TOPSIM

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.
About the certificate course

The management of care facilities is extremely complex and presents facility managers with a wide range of challenges. In addition to comprehensive industry knowledge, in-depth business knowledge is also required. In addition, the interests of employees, residents and their relatives must be kept in mind at the same time.
This certificate course provides you with the necessary skills to face these diverse challenges in equal measure. With the help of the TOPSIM Social Management simulation game, you will playfully take on various roles within facility management and make business decisions over the course of a maximum of six game periods.
Team decisions are made on the basis of news about the care market and economic data, taking into account quality requirements as well as financial and legal framework conditions.
The game phases take place in small groups in presence at the university, online in Zoom meetings and in self-study phases. You will receive support and feedback from the experienced simulation game lecturers.

Three questions for the lecturers:

Why is the continuing education program "Managing care facilities professionally" currently of interest to many professionals?
In everyday working life, there is usually no time to try things out or do things differently. Absences of several days for external training courses are often not possible. Many training and continuing education courses often focus on a single topic and rarely on an overall system. The social management simulation game offers participants the opportunity to acquire and train their team and leadership skills as well as specific management skills from the care sector across different functions. At the same time, the continuing education offers the necessary flexibility for their own professional activities and personal needs thanks to a high proportion of self-study time and events via Zoom.

What are you particularly looking forward to with this university certificate course?
"This course is being offered in this format for the first time. So far, I have only played the simulation game with university members (students and staff). During the initiation phase, we worked together with external experts. Now I'm looking forward to the input and feedback from participants with different practical experience and questions." (Heike Koß-Hülsen)

And what can the participants look forward to?
"They can look forward to variety:

  • A change from everyday working life
  • Variety in learning: self-study and attendance phases, digital and in personal exchange
  • Variety in teaching education: theoretical input alternating with practical applications in the simulation
  • Variety in the lecturers: Two experienced simulation trainers with different backgrounds from the healthcare sector and university lecturers"

Heike Koß-Hülsen is co-developer of the Social Management simulation game, which was relaunched and digitized together with the company Topsim by the Faculty of Health Care at Hochschule Niederrhein. It even won the Gold Award in the "Best Use Of Games Or Simulation For Learning" category from the Brandon Hall Group.
