More pupils than ever before took part in the nationwide Girls' & Boys' Day at The Hochschule Niederrhein on April 25. All ten faculties as well as the NIERS and SO.CON institutes and the library took part in the day. A total of 21 offers came together: 15 for the girls and six for the boys. Spread across the three campuses, the Monforts Quartier or online, the participants were able to gain insights into the degree programmes and professions at the university.
In the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics, we were able to look over the shoulder of pupils mixing virtual worlds with the real world in the "Mixed Reality" courses or bringing a robot to life with "OTTO". The girls in the Faculty of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science were able to program their own small game console using the Adafruit circuit board. The Faculty of Mechanical and Process Engineering got creative: the girls made their own personalized jewelry ("Hot Colors: Enameling") or cosmetics ("Engineer's Perspective"). In the MakerSpace, smart LED cell phone chains with covers were built that could be fully personalized. And on the Cyber Campus, a ninth grade student asked the students in a lecture the question: "Have you ever hacked?" Further offers for pupils took place in the laboratories of the Faculties of Chemistry and Industrial Engineering.
Pupils got to know all facets of a library at the Mönchengladbach site, researched social phenomena at the Faculty of Applied Social Sciences or were able to test how much truth there really is in the sentence "You are what you eat" at the Faculty of Food and Nutrition Sciences. The Faculty of Health Care took a sporty approach: The boys found out their physical fitness by taking various (sports) tests. The students were more creative again at the Faculty of Design, where they worked on CGI.
Many thanks to the numerous organizers who, together with the equal opportunities department, made this day an experience for over 200 young people!
