Profile development 2022 of the state of NRW
Smart Interfaces - SmInt

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

We are a team of ten professors from The Hochschule Niederrhein who were able to convince the state of North Rhine-Westphalia with the idea of Smart Interfaces in the "Profilbildung 2022" funding instrument .

The aim is to develop a sustainable research profile as a pilot in order to transfer it to the entire university and thus establish a self-sustaining innovation system in the long term. Another key structural element is a qualification concept for applied scientists. In interdisciplinary courses, they will be taught in particular the ability to think and act across disciplines with a sensitization to sustainability issues.

In SmInt, three sub-projects are used across the entire engineering spectrum in order to anchor the concept of sustainability in the university's research operations in the long term through the work of the two cross-sectional projects, in addition to their own research and development work on the element of textiles. The cross-sectional projects focus on resource efficiency and hazard management. This newly established research profile is supported by the so-called cooperation promoters, who develop and maintain the interdisciplinary structures. SmInt thrives thanks to an AI-supported pool of knowledge that will be available to future generations of students in the long term.

SmInt on the road

Conference contribution at the MAF 2024

André Merz

Our SmInt employee from TP1, André Merz, presented results from his research in a poster contribution at the 18th Conference on methods and applications in fluorescence in Valencia from 08. - 11.09. 2024.

Participation in Summer School

Aslihan Memisoglu from SmInt-QP2 took part in the "10th S3C Summer School on Sustainable Chemistry for Sustainable Development ", which was organized at Leuphana University Lüneburg from 8 to 12 July 2024. The focus of the event was on the concept of "Safe and Sustainable by Design". This aims, among other things, to design chemicals and materials in such a way that they are safe and environmentally friendly as early as the development phase. In lectures and workshops, approaches were discussed on how innovative chemical processes and products can be designed to be both ecologically and socially sustainable. The Summer School not only offered participants the opportunity to develop practical solutions to current industry challenges, but also provided numerous opportunities to network with participants from research and industry, especially doctoral students and professionals, which helped to establish valuable contacts and sponsor interdisciplinary exchange.

Environment Week

8 people in front of Bellevue Palace

The Federal President and the German Federal Environmental Foundation (DBU) hosted the Week of the Environment in the gardens of Bellevue Palace from June 4 to 5. 190 exhibitors and more than 70 specialist forums offered participants a deeper insight into various topics relating to the protection of the environment, resources, nature, biodiversity and sustainability. The Hochschule Niederrhein's "Smart Interfaces - SmInt" project team was on site with eight people, and the HSNR's Applied Scientific Agents took the opportunity to discover synergies with other disciplines and new perspectives.

Conference contribution at the DGHM & VAAM 20

Dr. Amelie Achten from our SmInt TP1 presented a poster at the DGHM & VAAM 2024 7th Joint Microbiology and Infection Conference in Würzburg from 02.06. - 05.06.2024(contribution P-BSM-048).

Tour of the SmInt laboratories

Laboratory of Prof. Wagner

People in the laboratory

A tour of Prof. Wagner's laboratories at the Krefeld West campus took place on 26.06.2024.

Laboratory of Prof. Groten

On 15.05.2024, the SmInt employees visited the laboratories of the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology in Mönchengladbach with a special focus on the SmInt laboratories of Prof. Groten.

TC laboratory of Prof. Roppertz

Visit to the laboratory for catalysis technology

On 13.05.2024, a test demonstration on the research topic from SP 1 took place for all SmInt participants in Prof. Roppertz's laboratory.

Laboratory for Surface Engineering

Tour of the Surface Engineering Laboratory

To improve mutual understanding, all SmInt academic staff visit the SmInt laboratories (laboratories that are being converted for resource acquisition).

  • The tour started on 24.04.2024 in Prof. Mark Lake's Laboratory for Surface Engineering (FK09).

Workshops

Climate puzzle workshop

Climate puzzle

On 28.08.2024 we had Nicole Engelhardt as a guest speaker for a workshop.

As part of the ASA qualification, our SmInt employees had the opportunity to take part in the"Climate Puzzle" workshop format. As part of education for sustainable development (ESD), this format is ideal for showing participants important connections in terms of climate change and highlighting ways in which each individual can take action to protect the climate.

Setting the course" workshop at DLR

3 people in front of the DLR

On 18.06.2024, project management and coordination accepted the invitation of the Ministry of Culture and Science NRW to the "Setting the Course" Profiling 2022 event. Under the leadership of the DLR, after a welcome by LMR Thorsten Menne, all funded projects came together to discuss topics such as promoting young talent and recruiting personnel. Good practice examples from three projects from the "Profiling 2020" funding period also provided interesting impetus.

We organized a kick-off event for our SmInt academic staff on 13.03.2024 at the Mönchengladbach campus. The aim was to get to know each other, network and identify interfaces in the project.

Together, we visited the Textile INNOVATORIUM, a place where technology-oriented ideas and projects can be realized from prototype to market maturity.

Planning underway...

SmInt lecture series for 2025 are currently being planned.

We will inform you about new dates here.

Decision-makers from industry, science and the funding bodies define the framework for a future-proof, transferable and application-oriented orientation of postgraduate apprenticeships in the SmInt project. They set the course for which results and plans from the technical and interdisciplinary part should be pursued with emphasis because they can be used outside and/or within the university. As a member of the expert panel, you will have full insight into the design and content of all programs. We are happy to identify and develop opportunities for cooperation.

The expert panel will meet on four dates in hybrid form. It will start in the 2nd project year (early 2025).

Project duration: 01.11.2023 - 30.10.202

The "Smart Interfaces - SmInt" project is sponsored by the Ministry of
Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia as part of the "Profilbildung 2022" funding announcement.
