Ceramic workshop
Design

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

Within the framework of ceramic build-up techniques, the traditional ceramic material is used both for basic studies and for creative end products. The conditions in the ceramics workshop concentrate on free construction, supported by the possibilities of the plaster workshop. In addition, turning on the potter's wheel is possible.

The students are taught the fundamentals and techniques of working with the traditional material clay in the foundation course as well as in the project course. They learn to prepare various masses themselves, from fine turning clay to coarse-grained build-up masses in different colors, and to adapt them to their individual ideas.

In shaping, the focus of the workshop work is on free construction. The tools required for this, such as molds or templates, can be produced in other workshops of the faculty.

Equipment:
The Kermik workshop is equipped with potter's wheels (shimpo), some of which have devices for turning in and over, a knuckle-joint press and a plate roller.12 modeling wheels and various ceramic kilns (up to a maximum firing temperature of 1300°C) are available. Together with other workshop areas, machines and equipment are used, for example, for grinding, glazing, cutting or blasting. Thus, the concentration of the workshops at one location represents a significant advantage.

There are many shaping methods in ceramics. One way is to use wooden strips and cutting wire to cut clay slabs from a large block and then process them further.

Ceramic surfaces can be designed very differently depending on clay composition, color, consistency and processing.

The firing of finished or self-developed transparent or colored glazes represents another field of design.

The work in the ceramics workshop is largely carried out by the students themselves. In addition to shaping, this also includes cleaning the kilns in and out.
