Thought Fragments

"Gedankensplitter" is intended to entice you to enter the universe of questioning and thinking about the world and your own place in it.

The book provides a brief insight into the big questions of philosophy. Fourteen designkrefeld students have engaged with more or less well-known philosophers in order to make them and some of their ideas accessible.

So many questions and no easy answers ... An opportunity to immerse themselves in the complexity of concepts such as truth, ethics, morality, nature and existence in order to develop a feel for the complexity of critical thinking.

"Gedankensplitter" is the result of a course - Editorial Design by Professor Nora Gummert-Hauser. It is published by designkrefeld-edition in a limited edition of 100 copies. The book was printed using a total of three colours and three printing processes in riso printing, digital printing and screen printing.

From a different perspective

This 48-page colorful booklet whets the appetite for more: As an introduction to the investigation of the Lower Rhine's typeface past, students in a course with Dr. Dan Reynolds created vectorized copies of typefaces. A type specimen catalog produced around 1910 for the brass type foundry Otto Kaester GmbH of Krefeld served as a template. Each course participant:in then interpreted one of these words in their own way in a layout. Together, they printed this brochure on the Faculty of Design's color laser and RISO printer and hand-stitched it.

Project Director: Dr. Dan Reynolds.

Participants:
Alex Agapie, Kathrin Dahmen, Lara Fischer, Julia Frolov, Miriam, Ann-Christine Gierkes, Yllka Hulaj,
Josephine Ruff, Kathrin Wenger, Ruby Weuthen, and Mari Zagoeva.

BOTENSTOFF is a publication of the design department of the Hochschule Niederrhein and is produced under the aegis of various professors as a project assignment in the studies.

In the Master's Degree programme in Design, topics on morals, responsibility, attitude, action and aesthetics are taught in different teaching formats in the subject 'Ethics'. Exhibitions, symposia and this publication have been created in the process. In the present messenger 'Ethics and Design' some selected original texts are republished, which deal exemplarily with decisive steps of the design process and the connection with moral thinking. Master students dealt with the texts in a team and commented on them.

Project management: Prof. Dr. Kerstin Plüm

Bird's-eye view of Art Nouveau
Otto Eckmann and the KWM

This booklet was created as part of Dan Reynolds' editorial design course in the winter semester 2022/23. The course participants visited the exhibition at the Kaiser Wilhelm Museum. Inspired by other collection items from the museum archive, the illustrations in this booklet were created and realised using the RISO printing process.

The exhibition
"Collection Satellite #8: Shannon Bool meets Otto Eckmann. Everything that emerges now is the style of our time".

The Berlin-based artist Shannon Bool was invited by the museum to develop new works of art based on the partial estate of the artist Otto Eckmann, who died in 1902, and to present them in an exhibition. Although this kind of examination of Eckmann's work is a novelty in today's visual arts, Eckmann has always been a point of reference in the field of design. Especially in recent years, he and the artists around him have gained more attention.

Eating does not take place in isolation. It takes place in a certain environment - at a table, with certain objects, in social and cultural contexts. How food is served, how people gather around a table and what processes are created in the process have a significant impact on how a dining situation is perceived and experienced. From a design perspective, this interplay can be described as the dramaturgy of the meal. Space, objects, actions and processes together shape the situation in which eating takes place.

The five projects on display from the field of teaching Ceramic, Porcelain and Glass Design were created between 2024 and 2026 at The Hochschule Niederrhein's Faculty of Design. They deal with food and table culture as a design field and examine how design can influence, structure or rethink such situations. What all the projects have in common is their working method: They were created in inter- and transdisciplinary constellations.

We understand interdisciplinary as cooperation between clearly defined disciplines that bring their respective perspectives and methods to a joint design process, from different degree programmes and faculties to cross-university cooperation.

The work becomes transdisciplinary when other actors are involved in the process beyond these disciplinary boundaries - such as practice partners, users or external experts who actively shape the question and the design process, such as restaurateurs, trade fairs and the trade press. In all cases, collaboration is not an add-on, but the starting point of the projects.

This catalogue brings together the work of the students as well as the voices of those who were involved in the projects or accompanied them from different perspectives. The essays, dialogues and interviews expand the projects with insights into processes, perspectives and experiences of collaboration. They show how inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration in design can be conceived, practised and experienced.
