Eating does not take place in isolation. It takes place in a certain environment - at a table, with certain objects, in social and cultural contexts. How food is served, how people gather around a table and what processes are created in the process have a significant impact on how a dining situation is perceived and experienced. From a design perspective, this interplay can be described as the dramaturgy of the meal. Space, objects, actions and processes together shape the situation in which eating takes place.
The five projects on display from the field of teaching Ceramic, Porcelain and Glass Design were created between 2024 and 2026 at The Hochschule Niederrhein's Faculty of Design. They deal with food and table culture as a design field and examine how design can influence, structure or rethink such situations. What all the projects have in common is their working method: They were created in inter- and transdisciplinary constellations.
We understand interdisciplinary as cooperation between clearly defined disciplines that bring their respective perspectives and methods to a joint design process, from different degree programmes and faculties to cross-university cooperation.
The work becomes transdisciplinary when other actors are involved in the process beyond these disciplinary boundaries - such as practice partners, users or external experts who actively shape the question and the design process, such as restaurateurs, trade fairs and the trade press. In all cases, collaboration is not an add-on, but the starting point of the projects.
This catalogue brings together the work of the students as well as the voices of those who were involved in the projects or accompanied them from different perspectives. The essays, dialogues and interviews expand the projects with insights into processes, perspectives and experiences of collaboration. They show how inter- and transdisciplinary collaboration in design can be conceived, practised and experienced.
