Model making workshop plastic
Design

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

The plastics workshop consists of a large room directly adjacent to the wood workshop in the shed hall. In this workshop, students are taught basic knowledge of Plastics Engineering, plastics processing and various processes for model making. Here, models and model elements are created for ongoing courses in foundation courses, advanced courses and projects.

Equipment:
A highlight in the equipment of the plastics modeling workshop is the CNC-controlled laser cutter and engraver, which can be used to cut and engrave plastics but also various other materials such as cardboard, leather, MDF, textiles, etc.

Deep drawing
Deep drawing of plastics belongs to the so-called thermoforming processes. Here in the plastics workshop, thermoplastics such as polystyrene (PS), polyethylene (PE), polycarbonate (PC) can be (deep)drawn over a manufactured mold. The material is heated beforehand until it is soft enough and then drawn over the workpiece. After cooling the material is demolded. This produces, for example, housing parts for prototype model making.

Laminating
Another frequently used technique for producing molds and models is laminating. In this process, fiber mats (e.g. glass fiber mats or carbon fiber mats) are impregnated with an epoxy resin and applied over a molded part in several layers. After curing, the result is a lightweight and stable GRP/CFRP molded part, which can then be processed further.
