Information for schools

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.

Dear teaching education,

thank you for your interest in the Faculty of Design at the Hochschule Niederrhein, which calls itself "designkrefeld". We proudly look back on almost 120 years of design education in Krefeld. In the two creative Bachelor's degree programmes "Communication Design" and "Product and Object Design" as well as in the "Master in Design" students will be able to develop their creative personality and attitude.

The listed Pfau building on the Frankenring with its workshops as well as lecturers with their finger on the pulse offer the best conditions for this.

Would you like to visit and get to know our faculty with your pupils? With pleasure! We make various offers that provide an insight into designkrefeld and the study of design. In addition, we also make exclusive offers for teachers. Mrs. Watta-Baum and Mr. Eickemeyer are always available to answer your questions. You will find their contacts on the right.

On this page we present you the different possibilities. We are looking forward to the contact, your inquiry as well as your visit.

Best regards,

designkrefeld

If you have direct questions about the workshops, please contact Sarah Watta-Baum at Sarah.Watta-Baum(at)hs-niederrhein.de.

You can send us your workshop request with a desired date at least eight weeks before your desired date using the form below the presentation of our offers.

TYPO WORKSHOP

We create fonts

What is typography and what is it good for? We start with a short lecture and dive together into the exciting subject area of type. Later, we will develop the letters of the alphabet on an analog basis using a wide variety of materials on an experimental level. Finally, the results will be digitized and converted into a font. The font, i.e. the self-developed font, belongs to the students at the end and can be installed on any number of devices and used freely.

Target group: Upper school students
Group size: min. 6 max. 14
Estimated time: 5 hours

PHOTOGRAPHY WORKSHOP

Digital photography with iPad

How does a good photo come into being? We start with a short introduction to photography and highlight some tricks of the trade. Afterwards we will build mini photo studios with everyday materials. In the next step, the students can experiment with different backgrounds and lighting setups and use the iPads provided to stage and photograph different products.

The newly acquired knowledge will lead to exciting photo compositions, which we will present and discuss together at the end.

Target group: Upper school students
Group size: min. 6 max. 14
Estimated time: 5 hours

PRODUCT DESIGN WORKSHOP

We build furniture from cardbo

The students get an insight into the work of product designers in a short lecture. In order to be introduced to designing objects independently, we embrace the properties of cardboard and fast forward through a design process. We collect ideas and use our spatial imagination to create design sketches that merge design with the technology of plug-in systems.

The students then implement the developed solution as a miniature model. In discussion, we agree on one or two designs based on stability, functionality and design aspects, which we finally implement together as a lifelike unique piece of furniture.

Target group: Upper school students
Group size: min. 6 max. 15
Estimated time: 5-6 hours

BOOKBINDING WORKSHOP

We bind our own book

We will start with a short lecture on the foundation courses of bookbinding in the skilled trades sector. We will look at the different types of binding, such as thread, staple, ring and adhesive binding, and deal with the formats, grammages, running directions, surface structures and processing in the form of folding.

With the acquired knowledge, the students independently produce different book objects.

Target group: Upper school students
Group size: min. 6 max. 15
Estimated time: 4-5 hours

For teachers, we have also created a portfolio of workshops that you can book with us for your college. If you have direct questions about the workshops, please contact Sarah Watta-Baum: Sarah.Watta-Baum(at)hs-niederrhein.de.

You can send us your workshop request with a desired date at least eight weeks before your desired date using the form below.

Workshop Future Scenarios

This workshop offers a playful approach to conceiving future scenarios. In the workshop, we imagine new worlds with the participants and create thoughts and solutions.
What will our earth look like in 50, 100 or even 300 years and which resources are still available to us or which resources have been discovered in the meantime and can be used in a new way and how do such resources lead to new technologies.

Under these aspects we develop together new ideas for fictional products and scenarios and examine them with the participants.

Workshop "Filming with the Smartphone

Visual communication of teaching material

One of the many visualization tools in communication design, along with photography, is film. We encounter the medium everywhere - in advertising, on social media channels, and increasingly as a supplement to educational content.

And very often, the films are merely filmed with a smartphone. We'll show you how to film with your smartphone and give tips on how to get your content across.

Workshop leader: Birgitta Thaysen, Monika Eisele

Time: 3 hrs.

Workshop lead typesetting

The workshop offers an introduction to the history of lead and hand typesetting. Already finished print products from the workshop will be examined and a demonstration of the printing presses (Heidelberg platen/hand platen/press) will be given.

Afterwards, a short text will be typeset together and finally printed as a poster, postcard or similar.

Workshop leader: Stefanie Schweers, Dr. Daniel Reynolds

Time: 4-5 hours
min. 3 | max. 6 Participants

Workshop bookbinding

The workshop offers an introduction to the structure and scheme of a bound book and provides information on the production of the various bindings (thread stitching, staple stitching,
ring and perfect binding). It also takes a close look at paper as a medium and discusses the various formats, running direction, surface, folding and creasing.

A notebook in DIN A5 will then be produced independently, in which the paper will be folded, thread stitching will be carried out and a book cover with open stitching will be designed as a cover.

"3D Printing: From Idea to Prototype".

In this workshop, you will learn the foundation courses of 3D printing and the entire process from 3D design to printing a 3D object. You will gain insight into the most important processes, learn how to use 3D design software and how to operate the 3D printer.

You will develop your own 3D models (CAD) and print your first 3D objects.

Workshop leader: Emilia Breit & Knut Michalk

Time: 4 -5 hours
max. 10 participants:inside

Workshop "Porcelain

The workshop invites you to get to know the realization stages of porcelain products. In contrast to the more familiar processes of modeling in clay, the decisive stages from the model as an image of the product, through its molding in plaster, to its production in the casting process are demonstrated and practically reproduced.

Such development and production methods, which are still mostly used in manufactory work, combine productive and creative work with the material, a world of experience in direct contact with the material, which in the age of digitalization is understood as an experience and competence building block of creative work.

Workshop leader: Knut Michalk

Time: 4 - 5 hours
max. 6 participants:inside

Workshop "Plastic thermoforming

The workshop offers an insight into the model making workshop, with its materials, machines and techniques. An overview of the topic will be given by means of prototypes and examples. The participants will be able to design a defined surface with materials and wood forms, whether flat or in the space is up to them.

This will then be molded using the thermoforming technique. A wooden frame completes the created form and thus a complete work is created.

Workshop leader: Christof Schumacher

Time: 3 - 4h.
Max. 8 participants:inside

Workshop laser cutter - keychain

The laser cutter can be used to cut and engrave various materials, such as wood, acrylic glass, cardboard, etc.. In this workshop we will design a wooden keychain, bringing an outer contour and a graphic and / or lettering.

Workshop leader: Claudia Di Tommaso

Time: 3 - 4h.
Max. 8 participants:inside

Workshop metal - cell phone holder

A cell phone holder is made from a thin metal sheet. In the process, the sheet is cut, the edges are ground and then edged. After that, the resulting cell phone holder can be painted in a desired color.

Workshop leader: Claudia Di Tommaso

Time: 3 - 4h.
