Our faculty

In 2021, we celebrated the 50th birthday of The Hochschule Niederrhein. In this context, a film was made in which all faculties are presented.
Here you will get an interesting insight into the diverse activities of our faculty.

The first days

From the first day on, our "Ersti" tutors are there for you together with the study progress advisor Meike Hamacher.
Ersti tutors are students from the higher semesters who are happy to share their knowledge with new students, who are called Erstis, which is a nickname for first semester students.

What does that mean exactly? Since our Degree programmes are very practically oriented, almost all events in the first year are held in small groups. Even in the first few days, you will get to know your fellow students in these small groups and can then explore our campus and faculty together. Also in the further course of your studies you will work together again and again as teams in these small groups.

Our tutors and Mrs. Hamacher will, of course, also be at your side during the further course of your studies.

The first semesters

In the timetable you can find exemples of lectures and courses of our students in the second semester.

Nutrition Sciences

Food Sciences

As you can see, there are a lot of basic science and technical subjects at the beginning.

In addition to the regular courses, there are accompanying "tutorials" given by our students. This is like a "voluntary class" where the lecture material is explained again by students and you can ask all your questions.

Pre-study internship...

... is mendatory for both Bachelor's degree programmes.

  • Duration: 8 weeks full-time
  • Half of the time must be spent at a company
  • It must be completed by the beginning of the 4th semester

Further information can be found here.

Food Sciences

Graphic Bachelor Food Sciences

In food science, the focus is on food.

Developing food - processing it - making it safe

Our food consists of components of natural raw materials of plant or animal origin. In order to produce tasty, nutritionally balanced, healthy and safe food from these raw materials, it is necessary to recognize, influence and control a multitude of external influences on the raw materials as well as interactions between processing conditions and food.
Food science deals with the respective questions and the search for acceptable solutions for practical application.

Food Sciences Dual

Programme content graphic
  • The "Food Science Dual" program is a study program that accompanies vocational training. The same admission requirements apply to the university part of this program as to the classic Bachelor's degree programme in Food Sciences. Application and registration at the university takes place in the respective winter semester, after the first year of training.
  • The teaching is interlinked with the training offered by the Central College of the German Confectionery Industry (ZDS) in Solingen. The training and study schedules are harmonized between the two institutions in order to avoid scheduling conflicts between the two places of learning as far as possible. The dual package can be divided into the following sections:
    • 1st year: apprenticeship in the company and at the ZDS (with content from the 1st and second years of training as well as the intermediate examination).
    • 2nd year: first and second specialisation semester at the Hochschule Niederrhein
    • 3rd year: Apprenticeship in the company and at the ZDS (contents from the 3rd year of training and final examination)
    • 4th year: Third and fourth specialisation semester at the Hochschule Niederrhein
    • 5th year: Fifth and sixth specialisation semester at the Hochschule Niederrhein and Bachelor's thesis.
The concept in detail on the structure of the dual programmes can be found here.
  • For the university part of the dual degree programme, all performance requirements of the degree programme "B. Sc. Food Sciences (B.Sc.)" must be fulfilled. The university will link academic achievements with practical content (e.g. pre-study internship, project and theses) as far as possible with the processing of company projects of the training company. The lecture-free time is generally available for in-company vocational training and for work in the training company.
