Two graduates were honoured for their outstanding theses at the farewell ceremony of the Faculty of Textile and Clothing Technology at The Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR).
The Verband der Rheinischen Textil- und Bekleidungsindustrie e. V. donated 1,500 euros in prize money for Edda Jabben. In her thesis, the graduate of the dual Bachelor's degree programme in Textile Technology (specialisation "Textile Technologies") focused on the service life of textiles. Jabben drew up a specific test plan with various parameters to analyse five selected fibre types in terms of their durability with regard to abrasion resistance, pilling behaviour and burst pressure properties. She analysed the effects and possible correlations of different yarn production methods and finishing processes on these parameters. For her Bachelor's thesis, she cooperated with the Austrian company Lenzing AG, which also provided the five fibre types. In late summer, she will begin her master's thesis at the Textile Research Institute (ITA) in Augsburg. Edda Jabben would like to use the prize money as a start-up aid for the new phase of her life and the upcoming move.
The Textile and Fashion Network e. V. (TFN), the faculty's support association, also donated 1,500 euros to Nadine Bullerdiek for her master's thesis. As part of the "SiWerTEX" research project, the graduate of the Master's degree programme "Textile Products" dealt with the chemical recycling of dyed polyester textiles. Using the recycling technology of alkaline hydrolysis, Bullerdiek investigated how the chemical structure of disperse dyes influences their behaviour in the recycling process. She also used activated carbon to separate the dye from the recycled product. "The knowledge gained can provide a basis for assessing the suitability of a dye for this recycling technology more quickly in the future," says Nadine Bullerdiek, who plans to use the prize money for continuing education, trade fairs, books and materials to further develop her skills.
