For a semester abroad , you have the option of choosing between the HSNR's partner universities and colleges or organising your stay abroad independently as a freemover. The application is made via the Mobility Online Tool.
EU abroad: ERASMUS + study programme
Non-EU: PROMOS
By applying via ERASMUS+ Study or PROMOS, you automatically apply for the respective financial support. For further information, including the option of travelling abroad as a freemover, please visit the website of the International Office (IO).
Only a limited number of study places are available for all partnerships. It is therefore important to obtain information at an early stage, apply early and, if necessary, choose an alternative.
Language skills of at least level B2 in the working language are required for a stay abroad; this can also be proven in the Abitur certificate. Many of our partner universities offer courses in English. Please check the website of your chosen university for course material. Please also note the instructions for language certificates at the partner university. You can obtain the relevant language certificates at the Language Centre.
Students on the TCM degree programme do not need any further language certificates for English as the language of instruction.

Choose a suitable professor from the department who will supervise you during the project. This professor will assess the suitability of the internship position. Apply for the internship semester by completing the relevant application form (the link can be found in the download area on the right under "Forms and information") with your details and sending it to the Examinations Office. You will ONLY be admitted to the internship semester upon application if you have earned at least 89 credit points.
Information on accommodation, insurance, etc. can usually be obtained from the partner university.
The selection of courses must be recorded in writing in the form of a Learning Agreement . To do this, enter your course selection in the Online Mobility Tool. At least 20KPs must be earned by successfully completing examinations at the host university.
Course selection changes can also be made via the Mobility Online Tool via "Changes during the mobility" with the approval of the home university.
At the end of the semester abroad, an approx. 20-page report on the stay is submitted to the supervisorin a timely manner, for which a further 10 credit points can be awarded. This means that you will be awarded 30 credit points if the examination board recognises your semester abroad. Please remember that the credits earned in the host country may have to be converted into ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System).
As part of the Bachelor's degree programme, you have the opportunity to obtain the exclusive German-Chinese double degree in "International Textile and Clothing Management" in cooperation with Tiangong University (TGU, / PR China) .
In the double degree programme, you will receive two Bachelor's degrees in international textile and clothing management, one from TGU and one from Hochschule Niederrhein (HSNR). You will acquire intercultural skills and comprehensive knowledge of textile and clothing technology and management.
The English-language Double Degree Bachelor Study Programme begins after the 5th semester. The programme starts at TGU in March. (The semester times are similar to those at HSNR) The programme lasts 8 semesters. The first part of the double degree programme comprises 5 semesters of regular study at the Hochschule Niederrhein.
The 6th and 7th semesters at TGU comprise courses, an internship including visits to local textile companies. In addition, the Bachelor's thesis is written in the 8th semester at the TGU. HSNR students are supervised by two professors, one from TGU and one from HSNR, during the final thesis.

The Double Degree in Smart Textiles and Textile Innovation is a unique international Bachelor's programme offered jointly by Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and the University of Borås in Sweden. Combining cutting-edge expertise in smart textiles, textile technology, design, production and innovation management, the programme offers a truly distinctive learning experience.
At Niederrhein University, students complete six practice- and project-oriented smart textiles modules, acquiring advanced technical skills and developing functional prototypes for real-world applications in areas such as fashion, performance textiles, healthcare and wearables.
In semesters five and six, students study at the renowned University of Borås — Sweden's centre for textile innovation — deepening their knowledge of textile innovation, recycling, sustainable fibres and textile structures. The programme concludes with an innovation-oriented bachelor's thesis in an international environment. Both locations offer modern laboratories, creative spaces, and excellent research networks.
Graduates receive two Bachelor's degrees: a B.Sc. in Textile and Clothing Management from Niederrhein University of Applied Sciences and a B.Sc. in Textile Production and Innovation from the University of Borås. This gives them excellent international career opportunities. The programme has a strong focus on interdisciplinarity, digital learning, sustainability, and practical relevance, and prepares students to play an active role in shaping the future of the global textile and smart textile industries.
Students at the University of Borås can also participate in the double degree programme: they transfer to HSNR for one year to focus on modules in the field of smart textiles.
