IMH - Institute for Modeling and High Performance Computing

The IMH offers mathematical method and software competence in the field of machine learning and CAE-based robust design optimization in virtual product development, which makes it possible to develop safe, reliable and optimal designs and products taking into account the unavoidable scattering actions and system properties. In particular, it is possible that within the optimization in the CAE processes the unavoidable uncertainties and scattering of the actions, the system properties and the manufacturing processes can be considered. Beyond state-of-the-art methods, IMH develops numerical algorithms in the area of solution of partial differential equations, optimal control, stochastic analysis and multidisciplinary optimization on request.

Core competence of the IMH is the combination of

  • Numerical structure and flow simulation (Computational Fluid Dynamics)
  • Numerics of partial differential equations
  • Parallel and distributed high performance computing (CPU and GPU)
  • Machine Learning
  • Stochastic Design of Experiments and Data Analysis

Parallel and distributed computing

Another specialisation in IHM is the development of methods to map problems with high computational requirements to a given infrastructure. These can be

  • modern CPUs with many cores and functional units

  • clusters or
  • globally distributed computing resources, combined in a grid.

Stochastic Design of Experiments/Data Analysi

The developed Gaussian covariance networks are more predictive than KNN for regression tasks (especially with much fewer experiments) and more suitable than Gaussian processes for classification tasks. Moreover, unlike Gaussian processes, they also support large data sets and high-dimensional parameter spaces. Since the topology of KNN is fixed to the training of hyperparameters and optimized for arbitrary applications in the ML domain, the costly and time-consuming optimization of the network topology (by data experts or AutoML cloud services) is not necessary and ensures highly predictive, transient, inhomogeneous, adaptive Gaussian processes due to the high efficiency and low hardware requirements. By extending to multi-input/output Gaussian covariance networks, ML models can also be trained for time series and 2d/3d field data. The particular efficiency in experiment design results on the one hand from the high predictive power of the ML models and on the other hand from sequential, adaptive subspace sampling methods, which are in the sense of a Bayesian Optimization in combination of Expected (Volume) Improvement, variance reduction of the Gaussian processes and multivariate, nonlinear sensitivity analysis.

Compared to the classical DoE method with partial least squares regression, factor analysis and ANOVA, the following advantages result for the experimental design:

  • Suitability also for a high number of factors (parameters)
  • Suitability for any number of factor levels
  • Identification of measurement errors and random effects without repeating the experiments
  • Suitability for arbitrary nonlinear, multivariate correlations
  • factor ranking also for multivariate, complex correlations
  • Calculation of local and global, static prediction quality as 95% confidence intervals
  • Support of spatially and temporally dependent measurement or result variables
  • support of classification problems
  • Support of highly efficient adaptive, sequential, stochastic sampling methods
  • Online learning possible
  • Minimization of the required number of experiments
  • Sampling procedure starts with a minimum number of experiments (e.g. 10) and automatically optimizes itself in the course of screening, taking into account constraints, outliers and exclusion ranges

High Performance Computing

  • Parallelization with OpenMP and MPI
  • Computing on the graphics card with OpenCL
  • Numerics and computer simulations
  • Grid computing
  • Modeling, programming and simulation of particle motion in flowing fluids
  • Script monitoring in the Job Execution Monitor for the LHC Computing Grid
  • Virtualized test environment for complex investigations in a worldwide computer network
