Sensor platform for the detection of bacterial contaminants

Food safety requirements are constantly increasing, particularly in international trade. At the same time, existing methods for bacterial detection are reaching their limits: long analysis times, limited reliability and a lack of real-time capability make it difficult to take swift and well-informed decisions during the production process.

This is precisely where Bact-Scan comes in. The aim of the project is to develop an innovative real-time monitoring tool capable of detecting multiple bacterial contaminants simultaneously: quickly, accurately and directly within the production environment. By combining state-of-the-art sensor technology, intelligent data analysis and practical orientation, the result is a solution that is not only technologically impressive but can also be deployed immediately within the food industry.

From prototype to market-ready solution

A key objective of the project is not only to develop the technology as prototypes, but also to successfully transform it into economically viable and scalable solutions. Here, we at the GEMIT Institute play a key role. Drawing on our expertise in data-driven business models for industrial applications, we are working alongside Brightlands Campus Greenport Venlo B.V. and the project partners to bridge the gap between technological innovation and market launch. Close collaboration with companies in the food industry and our partnership with foodineum – the joint project between the Hochschule Niederrhein and the Rhein-Kreis-Neuss district – ensures that the development is tested under real-world conditions at an early stage and continuously refined. On this basis, business models with a strong practical orientation and marketing strategies are developed in collaboration with the project partners. The results are compiled into a go-to-market guide and further developed in consultation with relevant stakeholders. In this way, we ensure that Bact-Scan is not only technologically sound but can also be successfully implemented in the market.

Collaboration with the foodineum

The project is also supported by the foodineum, a collaborative project between the Hochschule Niederrhein and the Rhein-Kreis Neuss.

As an innovation centre for the food industry, the foodineum brings together companies, research facilities and other stakeholders across the food value chain. By translating scientific findings into practical applications, the foodineum promotes the development of innovative and sustainable solutions to the current challenges facing the food industry.
