2. When will I be hired?

We hire as soon as the doctoral thesis has been submitted and you have time to take on new challenges. The certificate can be submitted at a later date. We recognize subject-relevant employment after the degree for the classification of the pay scale group. This is only relevant to a limited extent for an appointment. It is the years of employment after the degree and outside of academia that are important. However, activities at non-university institutions after the doctorate are relevant professional experience. You will be employed as academic staff on a temporary basis for the duration of the project.

3. Are there one or two employment contracts?

It is more favorable from a tax point of view to have only one contract. You are employed 100% at the university and seconded to the cooperation partner. The company contributes to your salary costs. A cooperation agreement between the company and the university regulates the details of the cooperation. The employment relationship is limited for the duration of the career path.

4. Questions about the cooperation partner?

At a cooperation partner you fulfill a task that corresponds to your qualifications and that expands your experience for a future field of teaching.

The location of the partner can be anywhere, but for practical reasons within reach of the university or your place of residence, because regular courses are held in presence. But no daily presence at the university is necessary.

5 Is the project a tenure track?

The higher education law in NRW does not allow junior professorships or tenure track programs at universities of applied sciences. The program is carried out in more than 90 universities from all federal states. You can apply for this qualification program at our university or at other universities of applied sciences in Germany. In individual cases, people can also complete the qualification program if there is no subsequent appointment procedure at our university. Please note that the federal states have different university laws.

6 What do I do during the lecture-free period?

The tasks in the company continue. At the university, there is more room for projects, applications, etc. at this time. As an academic staff member, you have 30 vacation days per year.

7. Do I need to have knowledge of the German language?

In some faculties and fields of teaching, courses are also taught in English. You can check this in the module handbooks. Knowledge of the German language should be present.

8. What legal framework does the Tandem Niederrhein project entail?

The Wissenschaftszeitvertragsgesetz (German Act on Temporary Academic Contracts) regulates how long you may already be employed at a university after your doctorate in order to be able to complete another temporary position within the framework of the Tandem program.

9. What can I expect at my future place of work, the Hochschule Niederrhein?

The Hochschule Niederrhein has campuses in Krefeld and Mönchengladbach. Here you can expect technically well-equipped lecture rooms and a variety of research instruments.

You can get an impression of all the facilities and equipment at your place of work before you start. We will be happy to give you a tour of the university.

For the duration of your career you will have 4-8 semester hours of teaching education.

10. To what extent is it possible to work on a mobile basis?

The Hochschule Niederrhein is a face-to-face university. Nevertheless, some courses are held remotely, so that you can work from any location, especially when preparing your courses. In the case of company cooperation, you can best assess whether on-site work is necessary in consultation with your partner company and depending on the project status.

11. How family-friendly is the Tandem Niederrhein project?

With the Tandem Niederrhein program, you have the perfect opportunity to advance your career without having to put your free time and your family on the back burner. As a university, work-life balance is a particularly important concern for our employees. If required, the amount of time can be reduced to 75% of a position, on the part of the university, the part in the company cannot be reduced.

12. I meet all criteria of the prerequisite check except one and am basically interested in a UAS professorship. Am I still suitable for an application?

Yes, you are suitable for an application. We look forward to getting to know you and to helping you with any missing criteria so that we can work together in the future. Only a completed PhD and a publication list are required. We do not sponsor PhD positions.

13. I already work in practical application. Can I include my current employer as a cooperation partner?

Despite our broad pool of practice partners, we are always interested in getting to know exciting new practice partners in order to expand our selection. Therefore, we would be very happy to get in contact with you and look for a possible solution.

14. I don't have any practical experience yet. Do I have to look for my practice partner myself and can I only apply afterwards?

No, we offer you the opportunity to work with us to find a practical partner for you. From years of experience, we have a wide range of cooperation partners for you.

15. Is this qualification project also acknowledged in other federal states?

Yes, there are currently more than 90 universities from all German states participating in this program. You can also apply to other universities of applied sciences in Germany after this qualification program.

16 Does the project always last 3 years?

In general, yes, if you have not yet acquired any professional experience outside the scientific field. Creditable periods can shorten the duration to 2 years, in individual cases also to 4 years. It is also possible that you spend time abroad for the cooperation company.
