Requirements Management in Health Care
Methods for successful IT projects

Hochschule Niederrhein. Your way.
About the certificate course

Medical information systems in hospitals, care facilities or healthcare institutions can efficiently support and facilitate workflows. But often a newly introduced or "updated" IT system does not deliver what users expected. What is the reason for this? In most cases, software developers do not have sufficient knowledge of the medical application or the users could not express their requirements concretely enough. In this university certificate course, you will learn how to systematically determine the requirements for the IT system right at the beginning of a project and how to transfer them into a requirements specification. Because only a software solution that correctly reflects the needs of the users will be accepted quickly and justify the acquisition costs. Since the course is aimed specifically at users from the Health Care sector, you will benefit from the IT experience and practical examples of your colleagues.

Course objectives

With successful degree of the course you will be able to:

  • Understand and analyze specifications in the form of requirement specifications.
  • Identify and organize requirements of different professional groups and interests.
  • Communicate your specific software requirements in such a way that they are clearly understood and optimally implemented by the clients.
  • To prepare specifications in the form of requirement specifications themselves.
  • To oversee the review of specifications against defined criteria.
Target group

Health Care staff involved in the introduction to/replacement/optimization of software or IT systems. IT consultants and others who want to be prepared for the digital future in the healthcare industry.

Teaching and learning education

The original knowledge transfer takes place in the form of a classic seminar. Accompanying exercises immediately link what has been learned with practical knowledge, which promotes a sustainable learning process and facilitates transfer to professional practice.

The curriculum and further information can be found in the flyer and in the download area.

Three questions for your lecturer, Prof. Dr. Bernhard Breil:

Why is continuing education in "Requirements Engineering in Healthcare" interesting for many professionals from the medical field?
The daily work with a lot of data in Health Care is unthinkable without the right information systems. But how do I get the information system I need to support my tasks in the best possible way? An appropriate specification often requires methodological knowledge in the areas of specification and modeling in addition to the technical expertise that professionals bring to the table. I would like to address these topics in the course.

What are you particularly looking forward to in this university certificate course?
I am looking forward to being able to help interested participants with their practically relevant topics. Their different projects will create a good, interdisciplinary exchange in which the participants can also benefit from each other.

And what can the participants look forward to?
A practical orientation to the topic of "requirements engineering". Participants will learn methods that they can then apply to their specific projects on site, enabling them to create their own specifications or check existing specifications against relevant criteria.
