Goals of the studies
The Master's degree programme provides the qualifications required to take on demanding management activities and areas of responsibility by teaching and building up both leadership skills and conceptual IT expertise. The studies cover all qualification fields that are required for successful management positions in the information and communication technology sector in corporate practice.
The Master's degree programme MWI specifically qualifies graduates to assume leading positions in organizational units of IT service providers. These can be internal business units of companies or institutions, but they can also be management consultancies or IT system houses. In addition, business units within companies or institutions that have to commission and manage IT service providers as their customers are also suitable candidates.
Content of the studies
The Master's degree programme is based on the Business Information Systems (Bachelor of Science) degree programme offered by the Faculty of Business Administration and Economics at the Hochschule Niederrhein. However, graduates of related Bachelor and Diploma programmes in the field of Business Information Systems may also apply.
Structure of the Business Information Systems degree programme
In the first two specialisation semesters, core competencies are acquired in both business-related and computer science-related areas (e.g. strategic IT management, digital design and entrepreneurship, advanced software development, software architecture), but also subject-related competencies are taught (e.g. in the area of project management). Individual modules also focus on raising awareness of social issues and concrete research methods in business informatics (e.g. IT and society, empirical methods).
The third specialisation semester builds on this knowledge. Here, advanced course knowledge is acquired and practically applied through an extensive research project. The students are expected to coordinate their work and organize and carry it out independently. The lecturers primarily assume the role of advisors and coaches. Several modules are also offered on an interdisciplinary basis (e.g. introduction to cybercrime, leadership skills, methods of business and IT consulting).
In the fourth semester, students are required to write their master's thesis. The degree is completed with an oral examination on the Master's thesis.
The Degree programme is modular, with each module culminating in a performance examination for which corresponding credit points are awarded.
